About
Exchange 2013 was released in 2011 and has become the standard for Microsoft Exchange Server. Office 365 is now the latest version of Exchange Server and offers features such as cloud storage, collaboration tools and mobile access. Office 365 is a subscription service that provides email, calendar, contacts, documents, and other services through the web or via apps for smartphones and tablets. The service also includes a suite of productivity applications, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Outlook, Publisher, Access, and Skype for Business. You can easily migrate from Exchange 2013 to Office 365 using the Migration Assistant tool. This tool allows you to import data from your existing Exchange server into Office 365. You must have an active Office 365 account before you begin this migration process The following steps describe how to use the Migration Assistant tool: Create a new Office 365 mailbox Import mailboxes from Exchange 2013 Export mailboxes from Office 365 Confirm successful export Delete old Exchange mailbox Remove unused resources Complete the migration Steps 1-6 are performed on the destination server where you plan to create the new mailbox. Steps 7-8 are performed on the source server where you will perform the initial setup of the migrated mailbox. Before You Begin To complete the migration successfully, it’s important to follow these guidelines: Ensure that all users who need to receive emails during the transition period are added to the appropriate distribution list. If they aren’t already members of the distribution group, add them now. Use the same domain name (exchange.contoso.com) when creating the new Office 365 mailbox. This ensures that any recipients who were previously sent messages by the old Exchange server will continue to be able to receive those messages after the migration. Make sure that the user accounts used by the Exchange 2013 server are not disabled. Otherwise, the Migration Assistant won’t be able to log on to the Exchange 2013 server. In addition to the Exchange 2013 server, you’ll need to install the Migration Assistant on the Office 365 server. For more information about installing the Migration Assistant, see Installing the Migration Assistant.
