The Story:
The Boy Who Cried ‘Wolf’
Once there was a shepherd boy, who had to look after a flock of sheep. One day, he felt bored and decided to play a trick on the villagers. He shouted, “Help! Wolf! Wolf!”
The villagers heard his cries and rushed out of the village to help the shepherd boy. When they reached him, they asked, “Where is the wolf?”
The shepherd boy laughed loudly, “Ha, Ha, Ha! I fooled you all. I was only playing a trick on you.”
A few days later, the shepherd boy played the trick again.
He cried, “Help! Help! Wolf! Wolf!” Again, the villagers rushed up the hill to help him and again they found that the boy had tricked them. They were very angry with him for being so naughty.
Then, sometime later, a wolf really went into the field. The wolf attacked one sheep, and then another and another. The shepherd boy ran towards the village shouting, “Help! Help! Wolf! Help! Somebody!”
The villagers heard his cries but they laughed because they thought it was just another trick.
The boy ran to the nearest villager and said, “A wolf is attacking the sheep. I lied before, but this time it is true!”
Finally, the villagers went to look. It was true. They could see the wolf running away and many dead sheep lying on the grass.
We may not believe someone who often tells lies, even when he tells the truth.

Online Forum Activity
-
Students will be requested to answer the following question, which is related to the story, in an online forum.
We all know that lying is not a positive behavior. But do you think schools should have a clear policy to deal with lying? While cheating on a test is an academic issue and schools already have certain ways of dealing with such cases, lying to another student or a teacher could be viewed as a strictly personal matter that the school should not be involved in.
The boy in the story gets punished indirectly for his lies. Do you think schools should punish students for lying? If so, what punishments should they use?
-
Then, students will be encouraged to respond to each other’s opinions, using conversation threads, and create a discussion on the topic.
-
Based on their opinions, students should try to come to an agreement and create a database of ideas and methods that schools can use in order to deal with lying in an optimal way.
Puzzle: Determining the Order of Events in a Text
The following game, in which students need to put sentences in logical order, could be used as a reading-comprehension tool:
https://www.ixl.com/ela/grade-3/put-the-sentences-in-order
The students will be asked to play the game, in order to practice the skill of determining the order of events in a text. Then, they will create a similar game based on the events in the story “The Boy who Cried Wolf”.
Tip: cut and paste a few different sentences from the story into a word document in random order and ask a friend to determine the correct order of the events.
