DIARY OF ELIZABETH I

2

18th April 1583 (Nicolò Ranzato)

Dear Diary,

Today I will have a very busy day, but I decided to do it to distract myself for a moment from all the political and bureaucratic matters. In practice I will have to pose for 3 different artists, the problem is that I have no idea how to look and much less how to dress but I will certainly wear something luxurious and elegant, to make everyone understand that I am not an ordinary woman, but powerful queen of britannia, maybe I will also use some jewels but I still have to figure out which one, I was thinking of some necklaces but in fact I am undecided.
I would like to be able to have myself portrayed with symbolic objects to stand out more and give more meaning to the works, but I will have to ask the painters if they want.
However now I leave you I have to go to prepare, I will update you as soon as possible.

19th April 1583 (Lemmo Lorenzo) Real day (-/-/1583)

Dear Diary,

Today was a particularly stressful day, because i had to pose for three different artists. The first one i met was  Quentin Metsys the younger, such a strange name. He told me that i had to decide what kind of image i wanted to give of myself. Firstly i decided to add to the composition a globe behind me, as a symbol of the supremacy of England above the world. Then i noticed that there were some of my contenders and i chosen to include them. This because i wanted to say that i don’t need a hausband beacuse i married my beautiful land. When i was posing, i saw a sieve on the table, so i decided to add it to the portrait as a symbol of my chastity and also as a reference to the myth of Tuccia. Finally, i decided to wear a fairly elegant and refined dress, not too frazzled, but capable of giving the idea of the english elegance. As I write this I have just finished with him and i have now a break between the second and the third one. I am already tired and it is only the beginning.

19th April 1583 (Pavan Filippo) Real day (-/-/1588)

Dear Diary,

Finally i posed for the second artist, I was a bit nervous but I tried to show all of my grace and style with a very flashy dress decorated by bows and jewels; i posed in the royal room with my crown and two of my favourite paintings next to me. I was wearing my gorget, but the most important thing that couldn’t be missing: my beautiful pearls. I’m sure the result will be perfect.

19th April 1583 (Morello Riccardo) Real day (-/-/1592)

Dear Diary,

this one I’m about to do is my third and final pose.
I think I will be portrayed with the world at my feet to show how powerful I am, my figure that divides storm and serene so as to make it clear that I can decide what to do with my kingdom. In my left hand I will hold my gloves and on the right one I will hold my fan. I will adorn myself with jewels with necklaces and rings all in gold.
I think I will be beautiful.
