There are three types of plate boundaries, One is the divergent boundary. It occurs when two plates are moving away from each other which is causing new crust to form. Creates the seafloor.

The last boundary is call the transform boundary. This boundary can pretty much do anything it can, make earthquakes and deep-ocean trenches and mid-ocean ridges but does not destroy or create the lithosphere.

When a earthquake occurs it is when two transform boundaries rub against each other.
