The first time I met Max Kelada was in 1920. It was on an ocean Liner travelling from San Francisco to Yokohoma.

I’ve seen Mr. Kelada for the first time in the ship’s dining room. He was the center of attention as he argued with many passengers about almost anything.

When I saw Kelada in his arguments, I thought he was arrogant. I told myself that he is probably a terrible conversation partner and kept distance from him.

One evening I went to a social evening on board. I didn’t know who organized it and I wanted to meet new people.

I were disappointed when I saw Mr. Kelada making a toast. I thought that no event organized by this man could go well.

In the beginning, the party was enjoyable and everyone had a good time. I were surprised that Mr. Kelada hadn’t started a heated argument.

At some moment, Mr. Kelada threw a man out of the party, furious and yelling. I told myself that this would come- Kelada was very hot tempered and not good in social skills.

After the fuss relieved, I had a chat with a charming lady named Alice. She was an excellent dancer and all the men on board had noticed her.

When I wanted to taste Alice’s drink, she immediately stopped me. “It’s alcoholic and way too strong” she said, “The man that was kicked out? He tried to intoxicate me on purpose.”

The next day I saw Max Kelada in a different light. I knew he didn’t care much about the alcohol prohibition, but he cared for the young lady and for that I appreciated him deeply.
