This book is targeted for a 9th grade English classroom. In this unit, students will learn the importance of literary elements in a classroom setting. This unit introduces the main literary elements that will be needed in order to dissect a text. Students may have been exposed to literary elements in grade school, but this unit will take a deeper look into the importance of literary devices, and how they can be used to interpret an author’s intent of their work.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

 

1. Students will be able to identify and define the main literary elements 

2. Students will understand the importance of using literary elements in analyzing a text 

3. Students will be able to identify which literary element is being used in a text.

What is Theme?

 

Theme: the subject of a talk, a piece of writing, a person’s thoughts, or an exhibition; a topic.

 

*Example: “Never judge a book by it’s cover” 

 

  • Theme refers to a lesson / moral intended by the author. THEME IS NOT A MAIN IDEA!

What is Plot?

 

Plot: the main events of a play, novel, movie, or similar work, devised and presented by the writer as an interrelated sequence.

 

*Example: Exposition, Rising Action, Climax, Falling Action, Resolution

What is Setting?

 

 

Setting: the place or type of surroundings where something is positioned or where an event takes place.

What is Conflict?

 

 

Conflict: a literary device characterized by a struggle between two opposing forces. Conflict provides crucial tension in any story and is used to drive the narrative forward.
