Let’s Learn Shapes

To educators:

This lesson is geared towards Kindergarten.

In this unit, students will learn about shapes and the different qualities that all shapes have. They will learn that all shapes are different and be able to describe why one shape is different from the others. They will learn some new vocabulary throughout the book such as circle, square, rectangle, oval, triangle, sides, edges, corners, etc. Learning about different shapes can help students become more confident in their learning.

By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

• identify circles, squares, triangles, rectangles, and ovals
• describe the qualities of a particular shape
• draw shapes
• model the shapes using play-doh

This is a circle. A circle is a round figure that has no corners or edges.

This is a triangle. A triangle is a shape with 3 sides and 3 angles.

This is a rectangle. A rectangle is a shape that has 4 sides, 4 corners, and 4 angles. The sides of a rectangle are not equal.

This is a square. A square is a shape that is made of 4 equal sides and 4 angles.

This shape is an oval. An oval is a longer version of a circle, so it has no lines or corners.

Now, it’s time for a Shapes Scavenger Hunt! Find some examples of these shapes around your home or outside your home and draw what you find.
