[Art note: Frog knocks at Toad’s door]
2
Knock, knock, knock.
3
“Good morning, Toad,” said Frog. “Will you be my friend? I picked you a buttercup.”
“Be your friend?” laughed Toad. “Frogs are green. Who would a friend that’s green?”
“You are green too,” said Frog, gently. “We could be green together.”
4
5
Toad just yawned and slipped into the forest.
6
So Frog went to see Spider.
Knock, knock, knock.
7
“Hi, Spider. Will you be my friend? I picked this peony for you.”
“Be your friend? That’s preposterous. Frogs catch flies. Who would want a fly-eating friend like you?”
“You catch flies too,” said Frog, softly. “We could eat them together.”
8
9
Spider just closed the door
[Art note: Door to his spider web]
and returned to his lunch.
10
So Frog went to see Rabbit.
Knock, knock, knock.
[Art note: Frog knocks at Rabbit’s hole door]
11
“Hi there, Rabbit. Will you be my friend? I picked you a daisy.”
“You must be kidding,” said Rabbit. “Who would want a friend like you? You hop around all day long.”
“We could hop around together,” whispered Frog, but it was too late. Rabbit went back inside and closed the door.
12
13
Frog trudged on home.
14
[Art note: Sits at home dejectedly, until…]
Knock, knock, knock.
15
“Hi, Frog,” said Bear. “Will you be my friend? I brought you some delicious honey.”
“Be your friend?” asked Frog, looking way up. “But I’m so green. And you’re not.”
16
“I like green,” said Bear. “Do you like brown?”
17
“Sure,” said Frog. “But I catch flies. How could we ever be friends?”
“Simple,” said Bear. “You can catch all of mine!”
18
19
“There is one more thing, though,” whispered Frog. “I like to hop around.”
“I would love to learn to hop ,” said Bear. “Can you teach me? I can teach you how to roar.”
20
21
“Great,” said Frog. “And by the way, thanks for the honey. As we frogs like to say, Gribbit.”
22
“Gribbit?”
“Gribbit!”
23
“Roar?”
“ROAR!!!!!!!!”
