John Roebling utilized the caisson system to allow workers to work underwater and dig into the river bed. These chambers were pressurized to keep the water out, and as they dug deeper the pressure had to increase. Eventually, the pressure from the inside of the caisson to the outside became so great that workers suffered from decompression sickness. One of the first known cases of suffering the bends.
