for Riley and Gwen
who see what they see
and say it so clearly & dearly

Imagine
Imagination
Faces, critters,
dancers, singers
slingers, bringers,
blassering dithers
what do you see
when you look again
when you look again
what do you see?
Look again while you’re sneaky
peeking from under something.
Whisper it, sing it,
squeak it when you speak it.
What do you see?
What else, what more?
Does what you see soar
or does it crawl?
Where is the top
when is the end
if you begin
you can begin again
Can you say what you saw?
Can you see what you said?
You saw what you saw
and see more than you say
the day is long
the night is there
to carry us along
to the shores of Where
Why not do it again upside down
or through a cardboard tube
or with the hands of your eyes
open and closed and open again?

I’m seeking support
for a book series based on this concept.
Is that you?
This appealing book is simultaneously challenging, stimulating, reassuring and soothing. It is a grow-with-me, don’t-talk-down-to-me, include-everybody, take-me-seriously, let’s-be-silly-book. It both pulls you in and pushes you beyond the page. It can meet the child’s need for repetition, and yet urges the child to look again, find something else something, new, something different. This makes explicit and praises and practice of observation, close examination, including memory and association-making that is the basis of all kinds of intelligences.
