Canterbury Tales

“The Canterbury Tales”  is a collection of 24 stories that runs to over 17,000 lines written in Middle English by Geoffrey Chaucer between 1387 and 1400.

He uses the tales and descriptions of its characters to paint an ironic and critical portrait of English society at the time, and particularly of the Church. Chaucer’s use of such a wide range of classes and types of people was without precedent in English.

The Canterbury Tales is generally thought to have been incomplete at the end of Chaucer’s life. According to the Prologue, Chaucer’s intention was to write four stories from the perspective of each pilgrim, two each on the way to and from their ultimate destination, St. Thomas Becket’s shrine. Although perhaps incomplete, The Canterbury Tales is revered as one of the most important works in English literature.

Personal opinion: I found this topic very interesting and relatively simple to analyze.

The Wife Of Bath

The Wife of Bath’s Tale is among the best-known of Geoffrey Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales. It provides insight into the role of women in the Late Middle Ages and was probably of interest to Chaucer himself.

 Women were not identified by their social status, but solely by their relations with men rather than being identified by their occupations.

The image of the Wife underlines her dominant role as the partnership; she tells everyone that she is the one in charge in her household.

The Wife of Bath points to the fact that an equal balance of power is necessary in a functional society.

Initially we had to tell us who the wife of bath was without having read her story only looking an image. And I thought she was a simple aristocratic woman, dressed lavishly and elegantly, but with a much more open and insightful mindset.

Personal Opinion: This story from The Canterbury Tales was very intriguing and almost revolutionary for the time. I only had a few problems with the storyboard.

Adam Delving

The image of Adam Delving is one of the best preserved pieces of stained glass from the Middle Ages in England. It was created by “The Master of Methuselah” in 1174 whose pioneering work in lead work is evident in the musculature of Adam’s chest and fullness of his arms. Now in the Great West Window at Canterbury Cathedral.

The single tree symbolises a garden (two trees would have indicated a forest) and the golden clouds above his head symbolises the Heaven.

As you can see on the next page, the figure of Adam is in constant effort and we can see how life as a mortal is completely different from that of the earthly paradise.

Personal Opinion: I found this topic less interesting than I expected, on the other hand I liked the meanings behind the work.

Personal Opinion: I had a lot of fun participating in this video. And I really liked the result. Especially because we managed to create a video capable of going against the stereotypes about our school.

The stereotype i want to fight against is “You don’t need study if you go to a School of Art”
TARGET: I want to speak to teachers, people and students from other schools
OBJECTIVES: With this campaign i want to valorize our School of Art and the realtive subjects.
HOW YOU WANT TO GET THESE RESULTS:
We will get these results by: – Making t-shirts – Create videos – Making interviews

WHAT YOU ARE GOING TO DO TO REALISE YOUR IDEA
I want to create a merchandise that will be sponsorized in our video. (LIKE A T-SHIRT WITH OUR LOGO)

Then i will create some videos that will be upolad in Youtube. (students and teachers working together for a better school, doing different and intersting subjects, artistic, graphics and multimedia).

Also we will make some interviews with students of our school and students of others school, to see the different iedas they have.

Ed Sheeran “Eraser”

Through the SBTV website we were able to hear the song Eraser by Ed sheeran. After that we compiled some quizzes about the song and then talked about it with the class.

The song was particularly focused on his life and the choices that led to his success. From his darkest and most difficult moments, to his better and satisfying moments.

Personal Opinion: I found the words and concepts in the song very beautiful and well articulated.

Chaplin

On 11 May Riccardo Ongaro gave a lecture on Chaplin’s speech in the film “The Great Dictator”(1940) partially featured in the Lavazza commercial.

In his speech, Chaplin talks about human rights, freedom and human progress. Going against the war, the dictatorship and the tyranny of greedy men.

Many parts of the original speech were used in the Lavazza commercial a few months ago (April).

Personal Opinion: I adored his speech and was very impressed to see how many topics are still topical today.

Black Death

The Black Death was one of the most deadly pandemic in human history from 1346 to 1351. It counts almost 75 or 200 millions deaths around Eurasia and North Africa.

During the lesson we highlighted similar and different sides between the Black Death and Covid-19. We have seen the changes in society due to epidemics and how it is now and once upon a time many things have changed, such as medicine and prevention.

Personal Opinion: This topic didn’t interest me much, the various differences were more fascinating.

Magna Charta

The Magna Charta is a royal document of rights agreed by King John of England. He promised the protection of church rights, protection for the barons from illegal imprisonment, access to swift justice, and limitations on feudal payments to the Crown, to be implemented through a council of 25 barons.

This document is considered as a first written appearance on human rights (1215).

Personal Opinion: Liked the story, this argument interested me a lot. Especially because it takes up the discourse on human rights.

Grammar

During the quarantine, our class worked on several reading and listening in preparation for b1 or b2 certification. Unfortunately, following the epidemic, we were unable to go to Ireland with the Move project. Project that would lead us to the certification.

Personal Opinion: I’m really sorry I wasn’t able to go to Ireland, it was something I would have liked to do with pleasure. However, I admit that the exercises have been a great help in my preparation.
