There once was a girl whose name was Jennie.
She was very different than many.
She was pretty; like a doll.
She was also extremely tall.
Jennie was a good girl, a sweet delight.
She was never concerned about her height.
She had two tall parents and two tall brothers,
She didn’t think they were not like others.
The first day of school came, and Jennie was excited.
She said goodbye to her mom, because parents weren’t invited.
She sat in the class; listened to her nice teacher,
Then, she noticed that some kids were pointing at her.
“You are so tall!” one girl said,
“Like a tree” she added and scratched her head.
“You look like a giant!” Another girl said with a grin
“Nothing like I’ve ever seen.”
“Giant Jennie!” that’s how we will call you
And all the other kids joined too:
“Giant Jennie! Giant Jennie!” they said like one,
And Jennie thought that this was neither nice, nor fun.
Jennie ran home to her mother and cried
“Mommy, they laughed at my height, and they were right!”
“I’m taller than all of the boys and all of the girls”
I’m taller than trees and taller than boats!”
“My dear sweet Jennie” said her mom, while stroking her hair,
“Being long is beautiful; you look like a swan, so pretty and fair”
“Don’t listen to them, what they did was wrong.”
“Promise me you’ll be my brave girl, and stay strong.”
Jennie promised her mom that she will be brave.
She knew in her heart that name calling is no way to behave.
But it was very hard, not to cry
Although she did her best to try.
Jennie’s teacher saw that Jennie was sad, and she was very upset.
The teacher decided this is a good time to react.
The next week the teacher said to the class that a guest came for a visit,
She said that this guest has an amazing heart and spirit.
She also said that the guest is a volleyball player, a champion no less,
And that she also feels good about her body, really blessed.
“Do you want to meet her?” the teacher asked.
“YES” the kids shouted, “at least!”
The champion entered, with a golden medal on her neck,
and everybody said “Wow”
Every girl though to herself: “I want to look like her right now”
The champion talked about how important is it to love your body, and to respect it.
Without her long legs, she wouldn’t have made it.
Before she left, she approached Jennie and gave her the gold medal,
“You are a champion,” she said, “remember.”
Jennie was happy, she finally knew
She is strong and beautiful, it’s true.
She no longer cared if people called her “giant Jennie”
Because everybody is different.
Some people are tall, some people are thin.
Some people have different colors of skin.
Each one is a gift, each one has a compliment,
and Jennie will always be tall and self-confident.
