INTRODUCTION
During the period 1980 to 1982 when I served as the first accredited U.S. Army Attache to the People’s Republic of China, I was fortunate to be able to travel to all the provinces of China. I took photos in most of the places I visited. All of the photos included were taken with a Pentax camera and the original photos were slides which were then scanned into digital format. I am not a photographer and I subscribed to the notion that you have to take 1000 pictures to get one good one. In this book many of the photos are not good, but they do give an idea of China in 1980 so they were included. I confess that I have enhanced many of the photos to include adding a more colorful sky.
This book, composed of three parts, is a collection of some of the best pictures… in my judgment.
Part I will cover Beijing, the Northeast, Inner Mongolia, Lanzhou and Xinjiang.
Part II will begin in Tibet and cover Sichuan, Yunnan, the Yangtse River area, and Hainan Island.
Part III will cover China’s coast from Shantong in the North to Fujian in the South. It also includes Hong Kong in 1980 and I have added Shanghai in 2007 to show contrasts with the 1980s.
