The Girl and the Magic Ball
by Ester Mirsky
A long time ago, there was a magical island on the moon, and on it lived a sorceress in a high tower. Now this sorceress had a magic ball that could change into different forms and give a hundred wishes to whoever found it. One day, the ball decided to go on an adventure and rolled away.
At about the same time, there was a girl named Wendy. Wendy was a girl of ten, and she lived a quiet life in London with her parents. One morning, she went out into the garden and saw the sorceress’s ball which was disguised as a soccer ball. Wendy studied the ball for a long moment, then went into the house to consider what to do with it. Both her parents said that she could keep it since there was no chance she would find out who it belonged to. So, Wendy went out to play with the ball. She went out to the garden and sat down. She didn’t feel like playing. Right then, Wendy felt like she wanted to think about things.
After a few minutes of silence, Wendy suddenly said: “I wish I could kick the ball so hard that it would go to the moon and the ball would pull me with it!”
The second Wendy said that she felt an urge to kick the ball. Wendy kicked the ball and the ball rose into the air, pulling Wendy with it. The ball shot into space and landed in front of the tower the sorceress lived in. Wendy looked around, excited and surprised at the same time, to see that she was on the moon!
At that moment the sorceress came out and said to the ball: “It’s about time you came back!” and she threw the ball into the tower. She was just about to go into the tower when she noticed Wendy.
The sorceress looked at Wendy for a moment then said: “Hello there, my name is Holda;” Wendy looked at Holda. “She looks trustworthy,” Wendy thought.
Then she said aloud, “My name is Wendy.”
Holda looked at Wendy, smiled to herself and said, “I’m pleased to meet you, Wendy. I’d like to thank you for returning my magic ball to me.”
Wendy looked at Holda, obviously puzzled. Holda looked at Wendy, muttered something, and suddenly Wendy knew about Holda’s life and all her questions were answered…. “Care to come in and have something to eat?”
Holda’s voice shattered Wendy’s thoughts.
“No thank you,” Wendy replied, “It was nice meeting you but what I really want to do is to go home,” Wendy sighed as she realized how homesick she was feeling.
“Of course, I’ll just call the ball to take you home,” Holda said “Oh and if you want to come back, just say or think the words: star and moon, sun and rain, bring me back to the lane! OK?”
Wendy nodded. “Good then I’ll get the ball.”
Holda vanished into the tower and reappeared a second later, holding the ball. Then she told the ball, “Ball! Send Wendy home!”
A second later Wendy was standing on the porch of her house hungry and tired. She went into the house and told Mother: “Mother, I’m hungry, can I have something to eat?”
Mother looked at her, smiled then said, “Of course you can have something to eat, but afterwards, you’re going to have to explain why you’re late for dinner.”
After dinner, Wendy told Mother about the ball, Holda, and Holda’s history. When she finished, Mother looked at her and told her gently, “It sounds like you had a very exciting adventure Wendy, but it’s late and time for bed.”
