Sexual violence in South Africa

• The rate of sexual violence in South Africa is among the highest in the world.
• During 2015-2016, there were 51,895 crimes of a sexual nature reported to the South African Police Service.
• While women’s groups in South Africa estimate that a woman is raped every 26 seconds, the South African police estimates that a woman is raped every 36 seconds.

More types of violent

• South Africa has a high record of car jacking when compared with other industrialised countries.
• A high number of murders of taxi owners or drivers have not resulted in either arrests or successful prosecutions
• Automated teller machines are blown up, portable ATMs are stolen.
• Kidnapping in South Africa is common, with over 4,100 occurring in the 2013-2014 period. A child is reported missing every five hours.

Hate speech or free speech?

Among the words that would be banned are:

Kaffir – literally “infidel” but used in the way “nigger” is in the US.

Boer – literally “farmer” in Afrikaans. Seen as offensive by some Afrikaners because it has come to mean a racist. But many others use the word proudly.

Meid – literally “maid”, but has come to mean “whore”. Used as a term of abuse against mixed-race women.

Hotnot – an abbreviation of Hottentot, used to describe mixed-race people.

Coon and Coolie – used to describe people of Indian origin.

Bobbejaan – “Baboon” in Afrikaans, but used to describe blacks.

• South Africa is the 25th-largest country in the world. 
• South Africa has long coastline and along two oceans (the South Atlantic and the Indian).
• The Orange River is South Africa’s largest river. Rising in the Drakensberg Mountains.
• South Africa has borders with 6 countries, Namibia, Botswana and even a country inside the area of South Africa that call Lasoto.
• South Africa is a country with lots of contrasts, ski resorts in on side and in desert 50 degrees.

• The Jews of South Africa are now the largest Jewish community in the continent of Africa. This is a largely Ashkenazi community.
• The Jewish community has a large part in the country.  For example they take an active part in managing the cities,  they built galleries and libraries for local art and many more things.
• The languages  that are spoken in the Jewish community of South Africa are Hebrew, English and Yiddish.
• Most of the Jews are residents in : Johannesburg and Capetown.

TOP 3 TRASITIONAL SOUTH AFRICAN DISHES:

Malva pudding- A Dutch import, malva pudding is a sweet and sticky baked sponge pudding made with apricot jam and served smothered in a hot cream sauce.

Chakalaka and pap- Chakalaka is a vegetable dish made of onions, tomatoes, peppers, carrots, beans and spices, and is often served cold.

Bobotie- bobotie is now the national dish of the country and cooked in many homes and restaurants. Minced meat is simmered with spices, usually curry powder, herbs and dried fruit, then topped with a mixture of egg and milk and baked until set.

Cricket is a bat and ball game played between two teams of eleven players on a field at the centre of which is a 20-metre  pitch with a wicket at each end, each comprising two bails balanced on three stumps.

Cricket is the second most popular sport in South Africa after football  

The national team is known as the Proteas.

They won the world cup 8 times.

It also hosted the 2003 Cricket World Cup

Aaron “Ali” Bachar was born in South Africa in 1942 

At the age of 27 He became captain of South Africa’s first Jewish cricket team.

Bachar’s becoming a captain in the late 1960s was considered historically both sporting and Jewish integration into South African society.

Famous people from South Africa

Abba Eban 

Born in Cape Town, South Africa, on 2 February 1915 to Jewish parents. Eban moved to the United Kingdom at an early age

What made him famous was his political activities and his brilliant and exceptional expression. He was considered the “diplomat number one” of the State of Israel.

Participated in the design of UN Security Council Resolution 242, which ensured that there was no peace without a withdrawal .

Represented Israel in the form of Resolution 338. Following this decision, Ibn headed the Israeli delegation to the Geneva Conference – the first peace conference.

Famous people from South Africa

Nelson Mandela

• was born in 1918’ in Mavezo South Africa, he was the leader of the  movement that cancelled the Apartheid – the white minority that ruled in South Africa on the black majority, without giving the black people any rights of being equal.
• Mandela is famous for his long fight for freedom to the black people, which he did un violently protest which failed.
• As a result of this failure he decided to act with force and to organize violent protest . That led to his arrest and to his trial. his punishment was to serve 27 years in prison.  

His Nobel prize 

• After his punishment he continued the fight.
• On his activity, in 1993 he won Nobel Prize for peace.
• In 1994 he became the first black president of South Africa, antil 1998. 
• Nelson Mandela passed away in 2013.

• The African penguin is a very popular attraction in South Africa and many tourists in South Africa want to see them in their special beaches and islands.
