A Helpful invention

by Temima Goldin, Grade 6

When I heard what the topic of the newspaper was, I said to myself “Oh no, what can I write about discovery?” Then I thought how good it would be if someone would invent a special robot that would give ideas for things to write, (and would also write for me, because who has time or patience to write?!) After I thought about that, I had lots of ideas for inventions: a robot that can do my tests for me, a candy machine that is free and the candy is never finished, also a robot that does homework and can clean your room would be very helpful…

Those are inventions that would really help us (children) in life. But instead of inventing things like that, people invent things like recliner couches. Like, who needs such a thing like that?!

I have so many good ideas, maybe I should be an inventor. That’s a good idea. The first thing that I will invent is a robot that goes to school instead of me so I can sleep more. Just this morning, I was tired and I wanted to sleep more. And then I remembered that I had a test today and then I really didn’t want to get out of bed. Then my mother got upset at me since I didn’t get up. When I finally got out of bed, I saw that the time was 7:55 so I ran super-fast to school so I wouldn’t get there late. When I got to school (a little late) I noticed that I forgot my lunch and that the test is tomorrow… Did that ever happen to you?

If it did, I’m sure you would have wanted a robot that would go to school instead of you so that you could stay in bed.

But, how do you make a robot?

I didn’t have any ideas, so I called my friends. Sara said that she was in the middle of doing her homework and can’t help me. Rachel said that she’s tired and can’t think right now. I was really sad and I wanted to rest in my room. When I got to my room, I saw that my little sister was doing a tea party with her dolls. I understood that I would not be able to rest in my room. So, I walked out of my room and went to sit on the recliner couch (it was very comfortable). It’s a good thing that someone thought of such a helpful invention…!

Believe In Yourself By Elisheva Yarmish, Grade 5

Once upon a time in Paris, France there was a man named

Louis Pasteur. He worked in a laboratory all day long. People were interested in what he was doing and tried to look through his window. They poked fun at him and laughed at him. They thought he was crazy to think that he can find the rabies germ that is invisible to the human eye. Louis Pasteur believed in himself and ignored all the people. He knew that he could help people who were sick with the rabies.

At the same time in Germany there was a boy, named Joey, who was teasing a very sick dog by poking him with a stick. The dog had white foam around his mouth, was trying to bark but was unable to, and was biting on tree barks and rocks. Suddenly the dog managed to get out of the gate and ran after Joey. He bit him fourteen times until he was chased away by Joey’s father. Joey became very sick. His parents did not know what to do. They heard that the dog died and knew that soon Joey will die too.

One morning Joey’s mother was reading the newspaper and became very happy. “A doctor has found a way to save people like Joey,” she said. “People are invited to his laboratory if they want him to experiment on them.” She packed up everything for the trip and said, “We must leave now before Joey dies.” They took six horses and a large wagon and traveled to Paris. They arrived at Louis Pasteur’s laboratory. He explained to them that he will inject a small needle that is full of “soldiers” that will kill the invisible enemy, the rabies germs. Joey was very brave and he agreed to let the doctor do the experiment. After just two days Joey started to feel better. Everyone was so happy!

Louis started to save many lives. All the people who made fun of him felt very bad. I learned from him that if you believe in yourself and don’t give up, you can do anything.

S & A: Hi Alexander! How are you?

AGB: I am good. What about you?

S & A: I’m fine. Thank you. Welcome to Shalhevet’s interview. Here we will ask you a few questions about yourself and your invention, the telephone.

S & A: Where were you born?

AGB: Edinburgh, Great Britain

S & A: How many brothers do you have?

AGB: I had two brothers, Melville James and Edward Charles, but they both died young from tuberculosis.

S & A: What encouraged you to invent the telephone?

AGB: Both my mother and my wife are deaf. I experimented with sound because I wanted to help them hear from far.

S & A: Were you the only one working on inventing the phone?

AGB: No. I wasn’t the only person working on it but I was the first to finish the invention.

S & A: Wow! Impressive!

AGB: Thank you!

S & A: Did you invent anything else?

AGB: Yes, I invented several sonic technologies, including the photophone and the Graphophone.

S & A: How did you feel after inventing the telephone?

AGB: I was very proud of myself. I couldn’t believe it happened.

S & A: Thank you very much for talking to us.

Why The Toilet was Invented                  by Chaya Mencer, Grade 4

A long time ago, people didn’t              have a way to get rid of their                  waste, so guess what they did?                                                   It might sound disgusting. They          used to do their business in a bucket and then throw it into the street. Disgusting, right?!? In the story of Purim, Hamman’s daughter poured her bucket on Haman’s head when she thought it was Mordechai walking by. Well, think about it. If you’re going for a walk and everywhere you go there’s dirty waste all around, it will attract rats and illnesses. People started to get ill because it was so dirty.

Then one day a person named John Harrington was thinking about it and said, “If only there was a machine that could take all our waste into a sewer instead of making out streets into one.” John started experimenting, and – BAM – he invented the toilet. So John made a toilet company and sold a lot of toilets. The boss of the company was John Harrington, of course.

Anyway, see how important it is to clean the environment! It’s especially important during this corona virus. Remember to keep clean and wash your hands often!

My House on Wheels by Shira Funkelstein, Grade 3

I invented a house on wheels. I can sleep in it, eat in it, play in it, and live in it. It even has a slide in it so I don’t have to go outside. Then, if I want to live in a different place I could just drive the house somewhere else, park, and live there instead.

My Food Machine By Naomi Yarmish, Grade 3

I invented a special kind of food machine. You can put inside whatever you want (balls, pencils, paper, etc.) and food comes out. When you press the purple button, it turns the objects into whatever food you want, and when you press the red button, it turns off.

Who discovered the Popsicle?

By Cherut Gat, Grade 4

In 1905, Frank Epperson left a cup filled with powdered soda, water, and a stirring stick outside his house. That night, the cold temperatures caused it to freeze. Today, more than two billion Popsicles are sold every year.

That’s how the popsicle was discovered!

Dear Diary                                                                        February 15, 2021

I’m Professor Siharah Solomon the world-famous scientist. Today I have discovered a new type of chemical that can get rid of the Corona virus once and for all! It was actually caused by accident…

It was morning and I just finished brushing my teeth. Then it hit me! What if I experiment with toothpaste and see what I can find? Usually I’m not this excited to start an experiment but I have never experimented on toothpaste before. So I put on my lab coat, grabbed some cake to snack on, and got to work!

After a while I got hungry, so I turned around to get the cake. But when I reached the table, I bumped into it and one of my toothpaste formulas fell over and spilled all over my cake! Suddenly my piece of cake turned white. I was astonished. So I took a piece of the cake to look at under the microscope. Lo and behold the toothpaste-cake mixture turned out to have the exact properties to be used to cure the Corona virus! A sick person just needs to eat one bite and magically, he’ll be cured!

I decided to share my discovery with the world. Now the Corona virus is no longer a danger. People won’t have to wear masks in public anymore and we won’t have to wash our hands all the time. The world is saved – and all because of me!

Louis Pasteur: Chemist and Microbiologist       By Elisheva Reich, Grade 5

Louis Pasteur was born in 1822 in the town of Dole, France to a poor family. He                                                                                   was an average student who enjoyed art and singing.  But when he started to                                                                                           learn science as a teenager he knew that’s what he wanted to do for the rest of                                                                   his life.

Louis Pasteur became a chemist and microbiologist and was best known for his                                                             discovery of vaccination, fermentation and pasteurization and for proving that                                                      germs don’t just appear out of nowhere. That they are living things that come                                                                             from other living things and that they cause disease. He taught people that if they would just wash their hands with soap they would get rid of lots of germs and be much safer and healthier.

Louis Pasteur researched many things! Things important to humans, to animals, to the entire world. Germs and disease were a big part of his life. One of the things that many people know is that milk pasteurization is named after him! Milk pasteurization is a process where the milk is heated almost to boiling and then left warm for half an hour. In this process, the bacteria in the milk is destroyed which prevents us from getting sick.

He also found that he could make a weak form of a disease that would cause people to become immune to the stronger form of the disease. He called this weak form – a vaccine.  The first vaccine that he gave a human was a rabies vaccine which saved the life of a 9 year old boy named Joseph Meister in 1885.

Thanks to Louis Pasteur millions of lives have been saved and we all understand what to do to keep healthy and safe.
