Letting the Light in, at Shenkar College

Yftach and Daniel came to me. “Mel” we have twenty minutes to clean a window. How about the new library? You need light to read!”

How could I say no? So I said yes. The windows hadn’t been cleaned there in modern history.

Yftach and I were elected to clean the window while Daniel documented the event. He claimed to have experience in documentaries.

There was a technological issue to solve – how to clean the outside of the window without snappling.

But our students are resourceful. We came at it from the sides. Both sides.

There was a lot of dirt.

We scrubbed.

We wiped.

We did it! Another clean window at Shenkar.

We were proud of ourselves. We had taken ownership. We were in control.

“Hey guys”, I said. Come, let’s continue, there are more windows to clean. But they had run off to their lecture. Conscientious students, after all.

There are many more windows to clean at Shenkar. I will have to find more students. But I am guessing there are more students than windows.

And as designers everywhere know, ugliness is an opportunity.
