The Sultan Ahmed Mosque in Istanbul is considered one of the most important and famous mosques ever in the world, and it is also known as the “Blue Mosque” because its internal walls are decorated with the decorated Iznik blue tiles.

The Blue Mosque was built during the reign of Sultan Ahmed I in the year 1609-1616 under the supervision of Eng. Muhammad Agha, one of the students of the famous architect Sinan.

It is worth noting that the Sultan ordered the construction of the mosque in a difficult period that the Ottoman Empire went through due to its loss in some wars, as it was built from the state treasury and not from the spoils of wars, and for this the Sultan was criticized for its construction by some religious scholars.

The mosque is characterized by traces of the Byzantine and Ottoman architecture, its location overlooking the Sea of Marmara, and its encounter with the Hagia Sophia Museum. The mosque has a wide courtyard, 43 meters high and has more than 200 windows.

The reflection of the sunlight that infiltrates the mosque through the windows gives the blue tiles a beautiful look.

Aside from being one of the most important tourist attractions in Istanbul, the mosque is also bustling with the movement of worshipers during the five daily prayers, Friday prayers and Tarawih prayers in the blessed month of Ramadan.
