It was my second lesson of learn to play and I was a little nervous. I never thought I would play hockey but they moved me up from learn to skate to learn to play 5 weeks early.
“Ok, today we will work on skating, stick handle and learn a couple of new things,” our coach said.
We did a game where the net kept coming closer and closer to the wall and we had to keep the puck on our stick while the coaches tried to steal it. But you couldn’t go past the net and if the puck went past the net you couldn’t skate over to take it back. So then you had to steal someone else’s puck.
We also skated around, had to try to dangle the coaches, then we did a scrimmage. Blue vs Red. I was red. The coaches were goalies. I played right wing just like my favorite player Patrick Kane. We won the faceoff. In the first minute, a kid on my team scored the first goal putting us in the lead 1-0. It stayed 1-0 for almost the entire game. Toward the end of the game a kid on the other team was about to score the tying goal but I stole the puck didn’t pass it to anyone, went to the right then to the left. I skated past everyone. The defense was coming with five seconds left and I shot the puck. It went in the net as the final buzzer hit.
“What a goal!” our coach yelled.
I extended the score 2-0 with the game winning goal. As I was skating off the ice my friend Larry said “nice job buddy.”
Hopefully one day we will all be on the same hockey team.
