Forum assignment-moral dilemma

Adopt or shop?

The teacher asked her students a question – When you want to raise a dog, what should you do, buy a dog, or adopt a dog?

A discussion immediately opened up between two students, Danny and Gal. Danny was in favor of buying a dog, but Gal was in favor of adopting a dog. Read each one’s opinion and decide what you would do.

Danny says that purebred dogs are dogs with a pre-known appearance, and you know how they will evolve (for example, at what height they will be, how their fur will be, etc.) and not only that – if they can also speculate what their distinctive lines of character will be. If there is a type of dog you have always dreamed of, adopting a purebred dog can be worth your consideration. Anyway, these dogs are born, and someone will buy them anyway. A purebred dog is more beautiful, more special, and more adorable. When you buy a dog you buy a newborn puppy and you can educate it.

Gal says, many dog lovers are unaware that when they buy a “purebred” dog, they are actually signing a death sentence for another dog, who is waiting for them exactly in the dog near their place of residence. Adopting a canine dog and avoiding encouraging the dog breeding industry will directly prevent the death of tens of thousands of dogs each year. Beauty is an important thing, but even in this case, the human ability to make moral judgments of good and evil should make it clear that, on one scale, the aesthetic consideration of cute / beautiful / special, and the other side is the consideration that buying a dog means killing a dog who’s in the kennel – it seems difficult to think of ourselves as dog lovers and yet to argue that this is a real debate. The choice, it seems, is clear – save a dog’s life.

  1. You will divided into 3 groups. Each group will discuss separately about the options and ways of adopting a pet.
  2. After each group discussed about the options, you must choose one of the options you discussed and give reasons  for your choice.
  3. After discussing explanations of your choice. You need to have a concluding discussion about what the ‘cost’ of each decision is.
  4. You have two weeks for the discussion. After that the discussion will be closed.   good luck!
