Sendler was born on 15 February 1910 in Warsaw to a Catholic family. Her father was a doctor who treated the Jewish community. When Irena grew up she became a nurse and a Social worker after studying in the university of Warsaw in Poland. Irena died at the age of 98 in Warsaw.
During the second world war, Sendler worked for the Department of Social Welfare and Public Health of the City of Warsaw. During those years she smuggled Jewish children out of the Warsaw Ghetto and then provided them with false identity documents and shelter with Polish families or in orphanages and nun convents.
She saved 2500 Jewish children!
The German soldiers suspected Sendler’s involvement in the Polish Underground and in October 1943 she was arrested by the Gestapo. She managed to hide the list of the names and locations of the rescued Jewish children.
She was sentenced to death by the Germans but she escaped jail.
