To deliver an excellent elevator pitch, you must be prepared. Really prepared. Always prepared. Prepared to quickly state (and if possible, demonstrate) the problem. Offer your amazing solution. Shout out your call to action. All this in the time it takes to travel with your captive audience up or down an elevator. The following may or may not be based on a true story, but it’s a great example.

ELEVATOR PEACH

Guy with dog gets into elevator. Doors close. Presses the button for the seventieth floor.  Cuts huge noisy fart. Smiles. Dog cuts even noisier fart.

Young man (quietly):  Attaboy, Bill.

Door opens at second floor. Doors open and begin to close.

As doors almost close, a sword is thrust in a Z fashion between them, the

doors open to reveal a man dressed in a Zorro costume who gets into the elevator.

Zorro (as he enters and presses floor number 69 with the tip of his

sword):    I waited forever for this elevator (pause to look at the man

and dog as he smells the air).  What a smell! (to the

man) – who let a giant one in the elevator?

Young Man (blushing a little, changing the subject):  Wow, are you

really Zorro?

Zorro (disdainfully): No, I’m a mere mortal – Steve Jobs. I need this disguise because every time I get in an elevator, some inventor tries to sell me something.  (Smelling the terrible odor)   Man, open  a window – what a stench (pause, under his breath). I’d give a million to get rid of this smell. Unbelievable!

Young Man (giving his business card to Zorro):

In that case, I’d like to introduce myself (shakes hands vigorously with Zorro). Dr. Mal Odor, general fart buster. I just happen to have in my bag a bottle of my latest invention, elevator peach, just one spray keeps flatulence at bay. What do you say (as he sprays the elevator clean in a Z zorro-type cloud)? Invest? Buy me out?

The elevator reaches the top floor.

Zorro (as he leaves): I’ll take a dozen.(As the door closes) Do you

have it in apple?

Narrator  :   ELEVATOR PEACH – The smell sell

Try it the next time you meet Steve Jobs
