India has mainly four educational boards viz. CBSE, ICSE, NIOS, and State boards. In this article, we have covered all the major aspects of these boards.

The main reason to choose the right school board for your child is to assure their better chances of success in competitive exams. Also, this will enhance their chances of getting admission in premier institutes (for higher education) which impart quality education.

Let’s have a look at these educational bodies:

Central Board Of Senior Secondary Education (CBSE) – CBSE was established in 1962 under the supervision of MHRD. CBSE offers affiliation to both public as well as private schools. There are more than 17,000 schools affiliated with CBSE, which has made it the most popular education board in India. It also conducts annual AIPMT and AIEEE exams for admission to medical &  engineering institutes. These two exams allow students to compete for the seats in the reputed IIMs, IITs, NIT, AIIMs and other national institutes.

3

Indian Certificate Of Secondary Education (ICSE) – This board primarily emphasizes project-based learning and understanding of concepts. It is not very biased towards the completion of the curriculum, but at the same time, it is competitive enough. The ICSE assessment framework has focused on both academic and extracurricular activities. It also has a right balance between the subjects of science and the arts. However, this board stresses much on language learning, particularly ‘English’.

4

National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) – This board offers an option for ‘alternative education’ to students who are going through learning infirmities or for the students who can not afford to attend school regularly. Students can appear privately for these exams and there is also the facility of appearing in exams “on demand”, which means appearing for the exams only when the student is ready. Students can also choose any of the vocational courses offered by the board.

5

State Boards – The schools that affiliated to state boards are economically affordable to students, which makes them accessible for underprivileged families (in the lower economic region). The curriculum is moderately-loaded that provides ample time for students to explore more extracurricular activities. This board is favourable for parents who are working in non-transferable jobs. The content and topics are relevant and cover all the specific information that is useful for students who want to take state public service commission examinations.

Always pick a school board after thoroughly vetting it and also make sure that the school you pick is what your child needs.
