It all started with a mistake. We took a left on Lyssiou Street in Athens instead of going up the stairs. It turned out to be a serendipitous mistake, as mistakes sometimes are. We ended up bumping into Shuli’s Greek teacher Leon and his friends Christos and Nick at a local coffee house, Melina. When Shuli told them that we wanted to go hear traditional live Greek music that evening they laughed a long laugh. “Look no further”, Christos said. “The place next door has great live music every evening”.

Turned out they were right. We came back and spent a lovely evening hearing a dynamic duo (Stelios Lolos, with the wonderful bouzouki player, Danartio Dianasis),singing the best of the country’s traditional repertoire. They even threw in a Greek version of “Erev Shel Shoshanim” for our personal benefit. Here are some of the videos. Enjoy! And here’s the address, if you’re in Athens:

This song is actually a Hebrew one. It’s called Erev shel Shoshanim (evening of roses). They played it just for us!
