Giraffes Can’t Dance

This Project has been prepapared by Ebru ASLAN from Bursa Sınav College/Turkey ,Greetje STEFFENS from Obsstedeke/Netherlands and Javier BARBA from Escola Nostra Llar/Spain.

The name of the Project is ‘STORYTELLING’.It is about a giraffe which can not dance just like his friends.He tries to do his best but he can never dance with the song his friends dance with.At the end of the story,giraffe hears a song different from his friends’ song and he starts to dance in a miraculous way.His friends can’t believe him.Then the giraffe and the other animals see that every person is different and he/she may need different song to dance,different style/methods to learn.As a summary this story is about individual differences.

To create this Project,we built some steps to follow first;

(1)Introduce the groups to each other.

Brief explanations, power point, video, audio, etc. about ages, names, families, hobbies, subjects, school, etc.

FROM TURKEY:

(Dear students from the Netherlands and Spain! J

We are 5-B from Bursa Private Sınav College-TURKEY/Bursa.

We are really happy to be in this Project and lucky to meet you.We are 10-11 years old and studying in 5-B (23students.)Our school is very large and has 450 students in our primary and secondary school.

We are in a private school and have to wear uniforms which are red,white and darkblue.We have a an eagle emblem on our uniforms.We live in different regions of Bursa and come to the school with school buses in the morning.Our school starts at 09.05 am and ends at 16.50 pm.Ourbook is World Wonders 1.Our English Teacher is Ebru Aslan.We love English and ourteacher.We always do activities in the classroom and sometimes play games in ourgarden.We’relearning Simple Past Tense in this week and we really like making conversations and playing memory games about irregular verbs.

In 5-B there are 13 girls and 10 boys.We are good at sports.Girls are really good at singing and dancing.We also like drawing comics and listening to music.And Our favourite subjects are English and Maths and P.E.))

FROM SPAIN:

Dear students from the Netherlands and Turkey, We are the students from 5èA and 5èB. We are happy, brave, lucky, imaginative and funny. We are 50 students in 5è (fifth form). We are 10-11 years old. We are a public school and we don’t wear uniform. We live in Sabadell and the school is in the centre of Sabadell (Calderon Street). Our English book is “Tiger Tracks”. The name of the school is “Escola Nostra Llar” How old are you? What’s your favourite subject? What’s the name of your school? What’s the name of your teacher? Do you wear uniform? What is the name of your English book? Do you like your school? How many children are there in your school? Which topics are you studying now? Do you like these topics? Look at our blog! In 5èA, we are 11 boys and 13 girls. We like the playground. We love playing football, playing basketball, dancing, singing, drama and Minions. We like maths, art and P.E. We also like drawing, playing, football cards, Pokemon cards, etc. We love 5è A!!

(2)Activities to introduce the story:

1 Learn the poem by Dot Brown. Learn other poems in different languages.

2 Introduce animals from the jungle.

3 Introduce difficult vocabulary.

4 Brainstorm: what do you know about giraffes or about the jungle -animals, plants, etc-.

5 Typical dances around the world

6 Photocopy the story and give the copies – not in order – to the children. Ask them to put them in order.

7 Art stuff.

Poem about giraffes

“The Giraffe”

I went walking one sunny day

And guess what I saw coming my way?

I saw an animal walking toward me

Eating the leaves off the top of a tree.

He had the longest neck I’ve ever seen

As he ate the leaves that were so very green.

This animal I saw was really quite tall

With legs so thin I thought he might fall.

This strange looking animal was a sight to behold.

This very tall animal was a giraffe, I’m told.
