I woke up early this morning because someone was talking to me. In my bedroom!
“I’m not any someone”, he said. “I’m Yitzipitzimichipi from the planet Mars. But you can call me Yitz.”
2
At first I thought he was smiling. But then I noticed that he had seven eyes and a head. No body mind you, just a head.
“Can I ask you a few questions?”, he inquired politely.
4
I answered yes. I had never had a conversation with a real alien before. I was not allowed to talk to strange people, but Yitz was not exactly people, was he?
As I spoke, I noticed that his eyes moved around a bit on his head. “Was this normal for aliens”, I wondered. But I did not ask. I didn’t know whether it was polite.
6
“If you eat only strawberries for a whole year will you turn red? Will you smell like strawberries?” Yitz wanted to know.
I told him that I did not know the answer. He moved his eyes around a bit on his head.
“Do you know why people have exactly ten fingers?” he wanted to know.
8
I remembered that a teacher once taught us that we have eight fingers and two thumbs, but I didn’t want to confuse Yitz. I had to tell him that I didn’t know the answer to that one either.
10
“Why do humans have two ears and two eyes, but only one nose and one mouth?” he asked.
I have wondered about that one myself. I told Yitz I had no idea.
12
“Why do people smile when they’re happy, frown when they’re sad and yawn when they’re tired?” Yitz wanted to know.
I do all of those things every day. But I couldn’t explain any of them.
14
Yitz paused for a moment. Perhaps he was thinking.
Where do dreams come from?” he wanted to know.
I just shrugged.
16
“Why do grown-ups like the smell of flowers so much? Do they eat them? Do they pollinate them?”
So far, I hadn’t answered a single one of his questions. I couldn’t answer this one either.
18
“I see that you can’t answer ANY of my questions”, YiItz said. “This was my school homework.”
I apologized that I had been unable to help.
19
“Oh, quite the contrary”, said Itz the alien.
“On Mars, you get good marks for asking good questions.”
20
Suddenly, all his eyes started moving at the same time. “Oh, no! School starts in three minutes”, he yelled. “I can’t be late.”
And with that, he disappeared in a flash. Will he ever come back? I’m afraid I don’t know that, either. I sure hope he does. I have so many questions to ask him.
