Thinking Between Boxes

Creative thinking involves thinking between boxes, not outside of them. Jumping between two frames of thought, two states of mind, two categories, two things, two words, two disciplines, two ideas that seem to have absolutely nothing to do with each other. Dichotomous. Incompatible. The creativity begins when you start to glue them together anyway. Sometimes the connection is an invention that can be patented. Often the connection is fun and hilarious.

The BirdBrain Un-conference

When There is no Correct Answer – A Lesson in Creativity

Odelia Kohn Oppenheim and Elad Segev conducted a simple exercise in creativity with a third grade class. They asked them to “correctly complete” a picture when presented with a triangle. They drew houses. When they asked them just to complete the drawing, they let their imagination take flight.
