Throughout The Hunger Games Katniss Everdeen undergoes a transformation from loner in a tiny district to tribute in the most vicious game known to man. She must learn how to relate to people and where her loyalties lie in order to make it out alive.
Katniss starts out the book by volunteering to take her sister’s place in the Hunger Games. This first act of selflessness defines her throughout the rest of the books. She has changed from living for herself while supporting her family to someone willing to die for her family.
Katniss’ next transformation comes when her mentor, Haymitch, and stylist, Cinna, turn her into an unknowable creature: The Girl on Fire. She has become something the Capitol wants.
During the Games, Katniss’ skills in hunting are an asset. She is transformed in the Arena by her realization that she cannot live if Peeta dies. Even if her motivations at first are selfish, she eventually learns to care for some non-familial.
Katniss’ final transformation is when she becomes Victor of the Games alongside Peeta. She has also become a symbol of the revolution, a side effect she will spend the rest of her life embracing and rejecting.
