Geology story: Wave rock

I think the Wave Rock located in Australia was formed by wind/water erosion that eroded the bottom and left an overhang. Some evidence that supports this is the shape of the rock. If the top was harder than the bottom the bottom would be eroded by water running down the cliff. The same thing would happen with the wind blowing at the cliff. From a source called Skwirk there is the excerpt, “Its wave shape is the result of wind and water erosion over thousands of years which have cut the base and left the overhang, making it look like a giant wave.” This is kind of like wave erosion because in the wave erosion model the water left an overhang.

Before wave rock was a wave it was just a normal cliff. But it had to endure frequent rainstorms. The water running down its face washed away small particles of rock, slowly eroding the cliff. The bottom was eroded faster because the top of the cliff was harder.

After raining for a while the sun comes out and shines on Wave rock. Its heat drys the cliff and turns it brittle. A few pieces fall off and others are loosely attached. When it rains again the force of the water washes those pieces away. After millions of years of this process happening the cliff looks something like this.

When the wind blows on Wave rock it smooths the face. The wind erosion combined with the sun and rain is what gave wave rock its shape.

It may seem like wave rock isn’t being eroded anymore but in millions of years, the overhang will grow so big it will collapse and the process will start again.
