The Squire

In the Land of the Tartars, in Tzarev, the King Cambuskan, a man of many good qualities, honorable and wise, gives a splendid feast on the Ides of March, in order to celebrate his 20th year as a king. The King has a beautiful daughter, named Canace.

Suddenly, a strange knight from India approaches him, and after an elaborate speech, he shows to the King four gifts. These are a brass horse with the power of teleportation, a mirror, which can identify friends or enemies, a magic sword, which deals deadly wounds, and a special ring, that confers understanding of every language, included the language of animals.

The next day, Canace wakes up early and goes for a walk. A lot of birds are singing and she understand what their songs means. After a while, she hears a falcon crying in distress. So she asks her what’s wrong. The falcon explains that her lover left her for another. Canace decides to take cure of the bird and she builds a bird cage for her.
