In our community, there are many people who work to ensure that our area not only stays safe but works as well as it can. We will look at the large suburban town of Smithtown, NY and the members of its community that ensure the town keeps running.
Law and order is one of the things that make sure an area is ran smoothly. We look to our law enforcement officers to keep crime off the streets and make sure our area is safe. Jerry is a police officer with the Suffolk County Police Department and is stationed in Smithtown.
He says he chose this profession because he has a passion for keeping people safe and making sure everybody gets home to their families at the end of the day.
People in town need to eat, too. This is Nino, owner of a popular deli on Main Street. Nino was born and raised in Smithtown and stayed here to provide people from his hometown with the best food possible.
“I like to take care of people,” Nino said. “I always make sure my customers have a positive experience inside my deli and leave both stuffed and satisfied.”
When there’s a fire, who do you call for help? A firefighter, of course. Peter has been working at the Smithtown/Saint James fire department for over 35 years and now has two children, a son and a daughter, who work at the same department.
“It’s become a family thing for me. I always loved helping people stay safe and now I get to do it alongside my two kids. It’s a rewarding feeling. One of my favorite things about my job is going to the local elementary schools and teaching children about fire safety. It really has its benefits.” said Peter.
Camila is a sanitation worker in the Smithtown area. Camila and her coworkers come early in the morning and take the garbage that we leave in the streets out into her truck. Members of her team also work at parks, fields, and any public area that needs cleaning. There’s no wonder why Smithtown is so beautiful!
Mrs. Smith is a teacher at Accompsett Elementary School, located in Smithtown. Mrs. Smith has taught 2nd grade for over 10 years and has been working in the school district for over 40! Mrs. Smith says her passion for teaching and educating young kids is why she has stayed in the business for so long.
Every town could use a teacher like Mrs. Smith!
