Once Upon a Time, there was a little water
molecule. It was made of two hydrogen atoms
and one oxygen atom. This story is about the
adventures our friend the molecule and all the
trouble they got themselves into. They were a
liquid sometimes, a gas at others, and
sometimes, they were even a solid!
2
Our little friend started their adventures like so
many molecules do, in the ocean. They stayed
in the ocean a very long time.
They started feeling very sad. Then, on one
very hot day, the light energy of the sun
caused the water to heat up until finally they
were evaporated. They turned into water vapor
and rose to join a cloud.
4
The little molecule didn’t spend long in the
clouds before it and its friends condensed and
precipitated as snow. They landed on a giant sheet of
ice called a glacier. It was very cold, but they
wouldn’t be there for long.
Before they had time to solidify, the sun came
out again and our friend was evaporated and
back in the clouds before they even knew it.
6
The next time it rained, our friend landed in a
small patch of soil. Gravity pulled them into the
groundwater and they were there for an
unbearable amount of time. Finally, they
filtered into the nearby lake and met up with a
few of its old friends from the ocean. They
shared stories of their adventures. Soon a fox
came along and drank from the river. Our friend
didn’t like being excreted into the soil, but they
were free!
8
The runoff from the soil took them to the river
and flowed back to the ocean. It all looked so
different, but they couldn’t stay. They were
back in the clouds in no time. Our friend rained
on the soil and was absorbed by a plant. Just
before they could have been used by the plant,
transpiration saved them and they were back in
the clouds.
10
After being rained into the soil, pulled into the
groundwater and filtered into a river our friend
ended up inside another animal. This was their
least favorite place to be. Soon they were out
of that situation and were back in the clouds.
From there they found themselves in another
lake. This one flowed straight into a river. It
took a trip through the ocean and a lot of
traveling to get to where we see them now.
They are on top of a mountain frozen in a
glacier.
12
They have been frozen in that glacier for quite
a while now, but they find it nice and a relaxing
way to end a lengthy series of adventures. They
have had the time of their life. They’ve traveled
the world and met friends along the way.
