The Necklace
Philip and Emma both worked very hard but they were poor. Emma was not happy. She had dreams of a different life.
One day Philip said: Look Emma, we are invited to a party.
Emma: I have no clothes for a party. I have only my old, black dress.
Philip: Maybe you can borrow a necklace from your rich friend, Elinor.
Emma: That’s a good idea!
So, Emma borrowed a beautiful gold necklace from her friend. She was happy. She danced all night.
On the way home, Emma noticed that she lost the necklace.
Emma: Oh, no! Where is the necklace? I lost it! What will we do?
Philip: We must look for it everywhere!
But Philip and Emma never found the necklace. Philip went to the bank. He borrowed a lot of money. Philip and Emma bought another necklace for Elinor. They worked day and night to pay back the money. Their lives were hard and sad. After ten years, they paid back all the money to the bank.
One day Emma met Elinor.
Emma: Hello, Elinor. Do you remember the necklace I borrowed for that party? I lost it and we bought another necklace. We worked for ten years to pay back the money.
Elinor: Oh, no! That necklace was not real gold. It was fake!
