Introduction
I remember the first day I came to C.I.S in Reception. I cried on the first day, second day, third day and fourth day. I was having a lot of trouble fitting in and making friends. On the fifth day, I was strong. I told myself I will not cry anymore no matter how hard it will be. I was determined to make new friends, learn and be the best I can be. When I entered the classroom, everyone was playing when someone walked up to me and asked for my name. At first, I didn’t say anything because I couldn’t believe that someone would actually ask me that question. I told him my name then he told me his. His name was Richard. More people came to me and told me their names. A girl asked me if I could play with her. Of course I said yes. We built castle out of blocks and I got to make so many new friends such as Tamilore, Hisham, Baba and Rayyan. I was so happy to be in C.I.S even though I didn’t realize it then. Now, I have so many friends in C.I.S! Just being in C.I.S helped me realize something, ‘Being different makes you and everyone around you special!’
My First Step In Year 5
As I walked to my classroom with my mom, I was very scared and curious to what my classmates will look like and if any one I knew was going to be in my class. Before I stepped into the classroom, I took a deep breathe. As I walked into the sweet smelling classroom, there was no one there. Apparently, they were having music lessons with Mr. Julius. A nice lady walked up to me as I greeted her. Her name was Ms. Animasaun. I introduced myself to her as well as my mom. She had a little discussion with my mom then Ms. Animasaun helped me unpack my bag. She told me the rest of the class was having music lessons. I went straight to the music room after I unpacked. When I got to the music room, I was eager to see my new music teacher as well as my classmates. I took a deep breathe before I entered the music room. I saw a man teaching music to a slightly quiet class. Some people in the class were in my class the previous year while some I recognized and the rest, I had never seen them before. As I greeted everyone and introduced myself to Mr. Julius, I sat down quietly awaiting my long journey through Year 5A!

Year 5A’s Assembly
My class assembly was on our dreams and aspirations. It was so much fun! I wanted to be doctor but know I want to be an author. Wow! The person who inspired me to become a doctor was Florence Nightingale. Learning about her in Year 2 really motivated me to become a doctor. The fact that she took care of so many soldiers during World War 1 really put a smile on my face. Everyone got to say what they wanted to become in the future and we all had a picture of our role model. After that we showed a motivational video. And finally we sang a song called WORLD’S GREATEST. At the end everyone clapped. I was so happy that at least my Grandpa was able to come. We all left the stage then I took pictures with my Grandpa!
Literacy Week!
Literacy week was the best! The theme this year was ‘Myths around the world’. A few authors came, such as:
-Alan Durant
-Wole Soyinka
-Dibie Jenim
I was so surprised that Professor Wole Soyinka actually showed up at our school. I was also happy for my teacher, Ms. Animasaun, who gave Mr. Soyinka an interview. Amazing!
The door competition was also fun, even though our class didn’t win. The costume parade was my favourite. Our Year group always does Greece! There were so many great outfits that made me want to wear them myself. The spelling bee was quite scary for me because I was the one representing Acacia for Year 5. Even though we won I know I could have done better. I lost because the person that was calling out the words gave a year 6 word. All the Year 5 representatives left the competition in the same round.
Literacy week was probably the best one we’ve had so far but the next literacy week will even be better!
Numeracy/Science week
Numeracy week was extraordinary! There was so much excitement in all of it. First, we had the skittles estimate. Keji, Roseanne, Ayana and Ademide won the medium sized jar. I was so happy for them! Next, we had pie the teacher which was actually fun even though I didn’t pie any teacher. I got to help clean after all the pie on the floor. That might seem boring but I also got stained with pie! Then it was the pie eating contest. I didn’t participate in the pie eating contest because I didn’t want to eat that much.
Science week was very, very interesting. For the first time in my life, I dissected a heart! It was a goat heart. It smelt very funny but it was also fun. I found out that the heart is divided into four parts. I got to see the inside of a heart. Yuck!
The Healthy Sandwich Contest
The healthy eating contest was part of science was part of science week. We were to make a healthy sandwich using ingredients from the country a scientist is from. Our scientist was Isaac Newton so we used ingredients from England. It was so much fun, even though we had trouble deciding our ingredients. We served our sandwiches with squash(a British kind of juice). At the end of the day, our class won!
Sports Day
Sports day was so tiring. I came fifth place in my race and I wasn’t really upset because I know I tried my best! Our march pass was so much fun. My house (Acacia) changed they’re chant to man’s not hot. It goes like this…
‘2+2 is 4 minus 3 is 1 quick maths,
1 equals to first Acacia’s back to take it back
Bring it on to us, and we would shut it down
Sycamore’s not hot
Jacaranda’s not hot
Willow’s not hot
but Acacia’s hot
(Repeat)
This always overjoys me any time I say it!
Choir Challenge
I really enjoyed choir challenge even though my house didn’t win. I really enjoy singing, especially in a large group. Willow (Green House) actually won this time. Everyone was surprised because willow has a long history of coming in last place and Acacia also has a long history of coming in first place. Ms. Rowena choreographed the dance while we all sang. We didn’t stop practicing until we were all in sync. On that day, I really thought we would win. Well, we can’t all be winners!
The Kalabari Exposition
The Kalabari exposition was a lot of hard work and dedication. In African Studies, we were learning about the Kalabari people. Ms. Roju (the African Studies teacher), asked us to do a class presentation on the Kalabari people. There was a leader for each class and I was the leader for Year 5A. There was a bit of trouble but we were able to put something together. Everyone’s presentation was really nice. All our parents came and our class teachers were very proud of us. Everyone was looking so fabulous in all the beautiful outfits. We all brought food to share among ourselves. At the end, there was no winner but everyone thought Year 5C won!
The Robo Rave Competition
The Robo Rave Competition was a robotics competition held in Albuquerque, New Mexico that I went for, along with my brother, mom and a few students from C.I.S like Tiseyi, Fope, Maxwell, Farid and Nabil. It was so much fun and an experience I would never forget. We got to go to NASA, museums and the Sandia mountains: which is Spanish for watermelon mountains. It was really fun! C.I.S didn’t win. We came in 24th place out of 23 countries and over 50 schools! I know that we could have done better. There was a lot of drama during the competition and I was the middle of it all. I was the oldest there and I was trying to keep everyone calm. Mr. Bimbo (our coach) said I was doing a good job leading everyone. It was a lot of pressure because I ended up crying then all the parents gave me a big hug. That really inspired me. Next time, the competition is in China. China, here I come!
Leaving Year 5 and going to Year 6
I’m really going to miss Year 5A. This year has been one of the most influential year. I’ve gained so much knowledge and not just academic skills, social skills are a big part of it. Year 5A will always have a place in my heart. I would never forget all the times we used to make noise and have fun! I know that everyone in my class has amazing adventures waiting for them. Everyone in my class has so many special talents and that’s what makes up Year 5A. Not just one person, all of us. I know that all of us will do great things when we grow older. Year 5A has always made me smile. When I come to school every morning, all the faces of my class make me happy and inspired to do my best everyday. There was a bit of drama in second term but we all learnt our lessons.
As a young pupil, I always wandered what Year 5 will be like. I thought it was going to be the hardest Year of my life but it wasn’t (as long as you listen and follow instructions)! Year 5 was a bit challenging but I’m still moving. Going to Year 6 be dream come true. After Year 6 will be secondary school. I don’t even want to get started on Secondary School!
Well, there is always the end and the beginning of something. Even though my journey has just begun, I just have a good feeling that there is a pot of gold waiting for me at the end of my rainbow!
