A year ago in 1919 I was in New York City, a charming and vibrant city, I spent there without my husband, I did a full shopping with my good friend who paid for everything because my husband could not pay for everything. I was ready to go back to New York now.
This is a painting of me and my husband, and they drew the picture on the ship the “ocean liner” that my husband took me. After a year in New York, my husband and I met in San Francisco, where we boarded this ship. I think he wanted to compensate me for being alone in New York, he does not know I had a good friend there.
One evening on the boat, we went to dinner, sat at the table with some psycho who all the passengers on the boat called him Mr. Know everything and that evening I discovered that his name was Mr. Kelda. And at that table there was another one who looked at me all night and did not say his name, and Doctor.
That evening, my husband who of course likes to argue about everything found a partner, Mr. Know everything, decided to argue with my husband. They just shouted and argued about nonsense, at some point it just did not interest me so I played a bit with the pearl necklace my friend in New York bought me.
At one moment, without realizing it, everyone looked at me and at the chain, and then I realized that my husband and Mr. Kelda wanted to bet whether the pearls were real or not. At that second I thought to myself that my husband must not have known that the pearls were real because that’s how he knew I was with someone in New York. As soon as I realized this, I put the chain in my dress and said I was not feeling well and went up to the room.
My husband came after me, and told me that we could make easy money here, and I just pleaded and prayed that he would give up even though I knew it was hopeless, and I was right he did not give up. Then we went downstairs and they all looked at me, I think I’ve never been as embarrassed as I was then. I looked at Mr. Kelda and hoped he’d get the hint and say the chain was not real.
While Mr. Kelda studied the chain, my husband hugged me tightly, and I prayed that Mr. Kelda would say the chain was forged. After a few seconds Mr. Kelda had a smile and I realized that this was me and my husband going to part now, but suddenly Mr. Kelda lowered his smile and said he was wrong.
I never saw my husband happy like that, he got his hundred dollars and was so happy. And I wondered why Mr. Kelda would say such a thing, and what a good person he was, and that he saved my life and my married life. At that moment I felt a certain relief.
Because Mr. Kelda saved me and suffered humiliations for me, I decided that I had to thank him in a certain way, I wondered how best to repay him, and then I remembered my mother telling me what you took back. So I decided to pay him a hundred-dollar check, pay him back.
Somewhere you can say about this story, good end all is well. My husband did not know about the friend and the chain. I gave Mr. Kelda the hundred dollars he gave my husband, and that’s how everyone is satisfied.
