In 1920, I set out on a journey in a ocean liner from Sam Francisco to Japan.
The ship was very crowded, many people sailed during this time.
Despite this, I enjoyed very much, met new people, I was very connected to the festive atmosphere on the ship.
It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience for me.
In the evening, I sat around the dining table with four other passengers.
One of them was called Mr. Kelada, he was the most active person on the ship, he knew everything about every subject, and from what I experienced, he always had to be right in everything.
Next to him were the couple Mr. Ramsay, who did not like to be mistaken, and Mrs. Ramsay who was a wise, beautiful and gentle woman.
Suddenly, out of nowhere, one of the other passengers who sat with us at the table, started to talk about a subject that greatly disturbed Mr. Ramsay and Mr. Kelada.
The subject was about “Pearls” ….
Mr. kelada began telling Mr. Ramsay that he knew all about the pearls, there was no one who knew better than he about this subject.
Mr. Ramsay did not believe hem, so he tried to test hem.
Mrs. Ramsay had a necklace made of pearls, Mr. Ramsay asked Mr. Kelada, “How much do you think the chain has cost?”
Mr. kelada looked at the chain from a distance and immediately said “oh, in the trade somewhere round 15,000$”.
Mr. Ramsay smiled for a moment and than said “you will be surprised to hear that Mrs. Ramsay bought ut for 18$”.
Mr. Kelada answered him quickly, it looked like he panicked “it us not only real, but it’s as fine a string for its size as I’ve ever seen”.
Mr. Ramsay and Mr. kelada hadd the determination to win the argument, to show they were right.
Seconds later, the two of them bet on 100$.
Mr Ramsay claimed that the chain is imitation and Mr. kelada claimed that the chain was real.
Mr. Ramsey asked his wife to take of the chain, so that Mr. Kelda could examine it.
Mrs. Ramsey tried to take off the chain and after few seconds said “I can’t undo it”.
Mr. Ramsay jumped up, “I’ll undo it”.
Mr. Kelda examined the chain closely with a magnifying glass, a smile rise on his face.
He returned the necklace to Mrs. Ramsay.
I waited very much for his answer, it intrigued me very much.
Finally, Mr. Kelada opened his mouth, and said …
“I was mistaken”, he said. “It’s a very good imitation, but of course as soon as I looked through my glass I saw that it wasn’t real”, and gave Mr. Ramsay the hundred dollars.
I was shocked by his answer, I did not expect him to say he was wrong, he is a man who always insists on his principles and claims.
When he examined the chain I thought he was right by the smile on his face.
It was really something extraordinary, something here seems “smelly”.
