Baby Elephant was walking through the forest with her family. She stopped to look at a flower, and when looked up, her parents were gone.  There was no one to be found. Mommy! Daddy! She cried. There was no answer.

Baby Elephant was hungry, thirsty and tired.  “Will you take good care of me? I’m sure that my parents will come soon,” said Baby Elephant to the serpent.

“Oh yes,” said the serpent. “Come sit next to me so I can slither tight around your neck and keep you from catching a cold.”

Baby Elephant was suspicious. She walked on until she met Mr. Wolf. “Mr. Wolf,” said Baby Elephant, “Will you take care of me till my parents find me? I am very tired and thirsty.”

Mr. Wolf looked up from his empty plate. “Of course I will. I am hungry too. Come sit next to me and I will bring a fork and a sharp knife.”

Baby Elephant was worried about Mr. Wolf’s intentions as well. She walked on and met Giant Rat. “Will you protect me?” she asked. “Of course,” said Giant Rat. “I have many friends with sharp teeth who will be happy to protect you. Especiallly while you are asleep.” He pointed to a mattress. “Come lie down for a minute or two,” he said.

When Baby Elephant awoke she was surrounded by many Giant Rats. They had tied one her legs to a post. Baby Elephant could not move. She was hungry and thirsty.

Baby Elephant heard a loud noise. Her Mom and Dad had come for her! The Giant Rats scurried off.

In a moment her foot was free.
