Making Friends in Athens- Maria* κανοντας φίλους στην Αθήνα

Maria Skoula is a poet and an artist, painting aquarelles.

She is also a writer, illustrator, photographer and translator. 

Maria was born in Athens and lives there.

I first met Maria at the Σοκολάτα – Sokolata,

off Ermou street in Athens, while talking to Keti about poetry,

and having some of Keti’s best chocolates.

Keti introduced me to Maria.

Keti brought her Cavafy ‘s 154 poems book,

And the three of us had great poetry discussions.

Maria is a very sensitive woman,

And once I showed her my poetry she could see everything

Between the lines.

She has those eyes full of lights, wisdom, smiles and sometimes tears.

She said, “Suli i am so happy that I met you.  We speak the same language”.

Though I study Greek, I am still far from understanding Greek poetry,

So I asked my amazing teacher Leonidas, from Thessaloniki,

To translate it for me. 

Ποια νοσταλγια

Να σωσει τουτο το απογευμα

Το βραδυ ερχεται

Με ποιο να μοιαζει ;

Ασαγηνευτο

Ανοσταλγητη φευγει η μερα

Σαν αφυσητο πανι στο πελαγος.

Εμεινα τοτε γυμνη στην ακρη της θαλασσας

Υιοθετημενη

Με ορμη να παραλαβαινω

Τα βοτσαλα που ξεπεφταν στην παραλι.

It doesn’t enchanted me

The day passes by without longings.

Like a sail in the sea

With no wind
