Death rates remained persistently high in thue Potteries, and although in the middle of the 90′ century conditions in the Potteries were not markedly worse than those prevailing in the other towns and cities, by 1901 the area had beacome one of the unhealthiest places in England and Wales.
Antibiotics drastically reduced mortality from becterial diseases and their prevalence.
A vaccine was developed for polio, ending a worldwide epidemic. Effective vaccines were also developed for a number of other serious infectious diseases, including influenza, diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough), tetanus, measles, mumps, rubella (German measles), chickenpox, hepatitis A, and hepatitis B.
