Study English with the Beatles
ABOUT THE PROJECT
The project wants to approach the students to the English language in a joyful way.
We had the same experience, but with different Beatles’ song last year with students of the 4th year that now are attending the 5th year of the Primary School.
Studying English with the Beatles isn’t a new methodology because all over the world everyone has already tested this strategy.; but for us, in our Institute, is the first one experience: we are the pioneers.

AIMS
• Learning English with communicative ways.
• Enhancing the affective relationships creating a pleased musical classroom.
• Stimulating the desire to speak a foreing language exploring different cultures.

LANGUAGE SKILLS
• Developing and improving listening, reading, comprehension, writing and speaking skills.

WORK PROCESS
• Read out the lyrics alone, in pairs or in little groups and explain or look up words.
• Listen to the song, while reading the lyrics, with or without translation.
• Answer the questions, before speaking, then writing.
• Ask and Answer the questions, speaking peer to peer.
• Writing; do the Gap exercises; match the columns; cloze tests; singing.
• Each song is a separated song, but the project is only one.

HOW TO COOPERATE WITH ANOTHER
We can share and exchange all materials, worksheets, photos, some videos and all that we manage to create.

EXPECTED RESULTS
Learning English singing and studying the Beatles: their songs, their history, and ther story of their songs.
The project started the 16th of February and will end the 28th of April.
Two different groups of students will meet each Thursday/ Friday each week for 10 weeks.
At the end, as previous year, they will receive a cd as present and a certificatin for attending and living this project.
All together we will make a book as a school guide with all their work.

Le parole della canzone Eleonor Rigby, familiari a milioni di persone in tutto il mondo, sono tra le più commoventi nella musica pop:” Eleonor Rigby morì nella chiesa e fu sepolta insieme al suo nome; non venne nessuno.”… “Tutta la gente sola, da dove viene?”. La canzone arrivò al primo posto e cambiò il volto della musica pop.
E. R. era nata il 29 agosto 1895 al numero 8 di Vale Road in Woolton, Liverpool, strada addossata a Menlove Avenue dove Lennon era cresciuto e a cui, anni dopo, dedicherà la canzone Menlove Avenue.
Il patriarca della famiglia era John Rigby, il nonno materno, uno scalpellino che gestiva una piccola casa con due camere da letto, 5 adulti e la piccola Eleonor da accudire. Il vero nome era Eleonor Whitfield, ma il nonno insistette tanto da dare alla bambina il suo cognome.
Il padre di E. era un falegname operaio, Arthur Whitfield, morì quando lei era ancora una bambina, così che lei rimase nella casa di famiglia fino a quando compì 15 anni e quando sua madre Mary Elizabeth, si risposò. Da quel matrimonio nacquero due sorellastre, Edith e Hannah Heatley, che divennero le custodi della memoria di E., fino a quando morirono tutti i membri della famiglia Rigby.
Eleonor adorava le sorelle. Gli anni passarono, le sue amiche di scuola si sposarono e si crearono famiglie proprie.
L’esistenza di E. divenne sempre più solitaria, fino a quando fu costretta a guadagnarsi da vivere aiutando sua madre in una lavanderia.
Non aveva ancora 35 anni, quando alla fine sposò Thomas Woods, un caposquadra ferroviere di 17 anni più grande. Esiste un certificato di matrimonio avvenuto il 28 dicembre 1930. Il matrimonio fu un’occasione di festa, ma la sua felicità non durò a lungo.
Eleonor non ebbe bambini e questa fu la causa di grande dolore. Morì di crepacuore. Il 10 ottobre 1939, un mese dopo lo scoppio della Seconda Guerra Mondiale, ebbe una grave emorragia cerebrale.
E fu così che alla crudele e giovane età di 44 anni, Eleonor morì nella stessa casa dove era nata. Fu sepolta nel cimitero della chiesa di San Pietro.
Esattamente un anno dopo, nacque John Lennon, che avrebbe giocato per tutta la sua infanzia proprio dietro quella chiesa.
I membri del suo gruppo musicale scolastico, i Quarrymen, precedenti ai Beatles, avrebbero giocato e si sarebbero spezzati i denti nelle feste della chiesa, e Paul McCartney si sarebbe unito a lui a prendere il sole nel cimitero. Quel cimitero era un luogo che John, in particolare, conosceva molto bene, ma era anche tanto vicino alla casa di Paul di quei tempi. Nella casa di Vale Road, che era stata la casa della famiglia Rigby per più di un secolo, è stato ritrovato un sussidiario di geografia con la firma di una giovane E. R. . La lapide divenne un’icona dei Beatles.

The Beatles also called the “Fab Four” were an English rock band formed in Liverpool in 1960, and one of the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed acts in the history of popular music.

Rooted in skiffle and celebrated by some as the fathers of 1950s rock and roll, the group later worked with many styles, often incorporating classical and other elements in innovative ways. Their enormous popularity first emerged as “Beatlemania”, and as their songs became more sophisticated by the late 1960s, many fans and cultural observers thought they were the poster boys for the sociocultural revolution.
Initially a five –piece lineup they built their reputation playing clubs in Liverpool and Hamburg over a three – year period.
Moulded into a professional act by manager Brian Epstein, their musical potential was enhanced by the creativity of producer George Martin.
They gained popularity in the United Kingdom after their first single, “Love me do” became a hit in 1962, and the “Beatlemania” grew in Britain over the following year.

By early 1964 they had become international stars, leading the “British Invasion” of the United States pop market.
The band toured around the world until August 1966, when they performed their final commercial concert. During this time they produced what many critics consider to be some of their finest material. After their break – up in 1970, the ex – Beatles each found success in individual musical careers.

Lennon was murdered in 1980, and Harrison died of cancer in 2001. McCartney and Starr remain active.

1. The Beatles were one of the most influential music groups of the rock era and many consider them the best musical group on Earth.
