As I Grew Older

It was a long time ago.
I have almost forgotten my dream.
But it was there then,
In front of me,
Bright like a sun—
My dream.
And then the wall rose,
Rose slowly,
Slowly,
Between me and my dream.
Rose until it touched the sky—
The wall.
Shadow.

I am black.
I lie down in the shadow.
No longer the light of my dream before me,
Above me.
Only the thick wall.
Only the shadow.
My hands!
My dark hands!
Break through the wall!
Find my dream!
Help me to shatter this darkness,
To smash this night,
To break this shadow
Into a thousand lights of sun,
Into a thousand whirling dreams
Of sun!

A Letter To The Poet

Dear Mr.Hughes,

First and foremost I would like to say that I had the honor of Reading your poem and I was absolutely taken aback by your work it’s an absolute masterpiece.

As I read the poem I started remembering my childhood and it made me think of what I said that I would achieve and what I actually did do. I really fancy and admired the fact that you flipped the table and used ‘dark’ as a good thing and not as something with a negative meaning.

Lastly I would like to tell you to keep up the good work and hope you continue breaking the barriers of society, and making more pieces of art for us to enjoy reading.

Best regards,

Layla

My dream

Every person has a dream that motives them and makes them want to get better and in my case my dream is to become a software engineer.

Ever since I was in 7th grade I decided to become a model to younger girls and hopefully an inspiration as well. Ever since I could remember I was told that there were “boy stuff” and “girl stuff” but as I grew and time passed I realized that there is nothing like that and as a feminist and a human being it is my job to break the gender barrier, and considering that there isn’t a lot of women in this field and that I actually enjoy doing it, it became my absolute purpose to achieve this goal.

Choosing a dream can be difficult sometimes because your dream defines you and your personality, so the best dream you could ever choose to have it being happy.
