“As I grew older”
It was a long time ago.
I have almost forgotten my dream.
But it was there then,
In front of me,
Bright like a sun—
My dream.
And then the wall rose,
Rose slowly,
Slowly,
Between me and my dream.
Rose until it touched the sky—
The wall.
Shadow.
I am black.
I lie down in the shadow.
I lie down in the shadow.
No longer the light of my dream before me,
Above me.
Only the thick wall.
Only the shadow.
My hands!
My dark hands!
Break through the wall!
Find my dream!
Help me to shatter this darkness,
To smash this night,
To break this shadow
Into a thousand lights of sun,
Into a thousand whirling dreams
Of sun!
Langston Hughes
About Langston Hughes:
James Mercer Langston Hughes (February 1, 1902 – May 22, 1967) was an American poet, social activist, novelist, playwright, and columnist from Joplin, Missouri.
He was one of the earliest innovators of the then-new literary art form called jazz poetry. Hughes is best known as a leader of the Harlem Renaissance in New York City. He famously wrote about the period that “the negro was in vogue”, which was later paraphrased as “when Harlem was in vogue”.
Dear Langston Hughes,
…
…
I know that you are lying in your grave, but also I believe that your soul hears me, Recently I read your poem – “As I grew older “, I want to thank you for your story that you shared with us – a success story, I learned a lot from it , how to never give up, how to break the obstacles, and how to score the goal. I wish that this significance arrives to everybody, all around the world.
My Dream:
It’s a very strange thing that people consider their dreams like fuel to continue their life. And many people believe that humans without dreams and aims are like a library without books.
My aim is to become a cardiologist not only would it be amazing to touch ones heart physically but also emotionally, there is nothing greater than giving a person another chance to live, My dream is possible.
