summary:
(This book showed love and it’s beautiful nature but also the hard reality of life.)
Lou Clark knows lots of things. She knows how many footsteps there are between the bus stop and home. She knows she likes working in The Buttered Bun tea shop and she knows she might not love her boyfriend Patrick.
What Lou doesn’t know is she’s about to lose her job or that knowing what’s coming is what keeps her sane.
Will Traynor knows his motorcycle accident took away his desire to live. He knows everything feels very small and rather joyless now and he knows exactly how he’s going to put a stop to that.
What Will doesn’t know is that Lou is about to burst into his world in a riot of colour. And neither of them knows they’re going to change the other for all time.
This romantic and touching story teaches us significant lessons worthy of keeping throughout our lives:
1. Be thankful for what you have and appreciate the little things.
Will makes us realize that the little things in life are actually big things, such as being able to walk to places and live freely without any limitations. You don’t always realize just how lucky you have it until a life-changing event happens, which is exactly what happened to Will. Everyone has bad days, but sometimes we forget that there are people who have it much worse than us.
2. Live boldly and have no regrets – “Just live.”
While Lou is happy settling with a simple life, Will pushes her to become more active as he once was before he became quadriplegic. There are so many amazing opportunities to take advantage of and it’s up to us to seize every moment. Will teaches us to take every chance you get in life because some things only happen once. We shouldn’t regret the actions we take in life, rather we should appreciate the lessons they have taught us.
3. Quality outweighs quantity.
Although we sometimes think that the longer we live the better, the quality of our lives is far more important. By quality, I mean being blessed with happiness, good health and love. We shouldn’t count the things we do in a day; rather we should do the things that count. How we live our lives counts for more than the number of years we live.
4. Be compassionate toward others.
Lou is the most selfless, kind and caring character in Me Before You. She puts others before herself, including Will and her family. She works hard to support her family and opens Will’s heart to love again. Lou shows us that helping those in need and just smiling at someone can go a long way. Compassion is contagious and it is something we should strive for everyday.
5. A positive attitude is always key.
Shit happens. There are so many things in life that can make us happy and make us sad. But the truth is – we have the opportunity to do amazing things with our lives. Everything is about perspective and if you have a positive attitude, things are bound to get better. Don’t let life get you down. Let life build you up – embrace it for all it’s good and bad. You won’t regret it.
6. Love heals pain; embrace it.
In order to experience love, we have to put ourselves out there and be vulnerable. This is not the easiest thing to do, but when we open our hearts to one another just as Lou and Will did, it can change everything. Despite the difficult time that Will was going through, it was Lou’s love that inspired and motivated him to get up every morning. The greatest gift we can give to someone is loving them through the good and the bad and being there for them when they need us the most.
7. you think that you know… but you have no idea.
While reading Me Before You, I was able to really see into the life of a disabled person, and not just them, their family and their loved ones as well. By the end I realized, that all of the pain and sorrow I felt for Will and his family and all of the anger, depression and helplessness I felt emanating from Will… is very little in comparison to what he must go through on a daily basis. So while I feel that I can empathize and understand, I really have no idea how a disabled person suffers. I do not even feel that his family or loved ones could truly understand what he was going through.
8. Sometimes, even when it’s unexpected, people have a way of surprising you.
From the moment that Will meets Louisa, he seems to think that he has her figured out. Yet time after time, she surprises him. From their first meeting up until the very end, she was so unpredictable and fascinating. I loved seeing her change through his eyes and I loved how she seemed to open him up and let us see the real Will hiding inside.
9. Sometimes the best way to show someone you love them is to let them go.
While it’s obvious that Lou lets Will go, Will also lets Lou go; he feels that a life with him would constrict the way she ought to live. In leaving her, he frees her to pursue the life she wanted before she even met him.
10. Sometimes the journey is hard, but getting there is rewarding.
There are so many things in life that can go wrong. We think that we know what we want, we spend a long time searching for our purpose, we try to find someone to make sense of why we are on this earth. But the truth is – we’re going to mess up a lot. We’re going to have a hard time finding the perfect job, the perfect life, the perfect love. But if we take each moment as it comes – if we LIVE – the journey of getting to where we need to be will be rewarding.
11. Live life to the fullest.
“YOLO” holds true to this statement. You only live once, so you should cherish every moment and take advantage of every opportunity you receive in life. For in the end, we only regret the chances we didn’t take.
“You only get one life… it’s your duty to live it as fully as possible.” – Will Traynor

after i finished the book “me before you”:
I’m sitting here with tears running down my face having just finished this book. I know I should probably let my emotions settle before reviewing but I want to get all the feelings down…
Firstly I want to say that the cover does not do this book justice. It gives the impression of a bland and fluffy read when in reality this is a heartbreaking story, with subject matter that may be difficult for a lot of readers.
I can’t remember when I last finished a story that had tied me up in so many emotional knots and still left me completely satisfied with having read it.
Me Before You is real, just like life is real. This is not a simple book with silly characters that fall in love and that’s it. This is a book about friendship, love, patience, ambitions and many many many more things. Yes, you’re gonna cry if you’re human but you’re gonna LAUGH, a lot! Because Will & Lou are smart that will make you love them from the beginning.
You know what? I had the pleasure of reading this book and I marked the whole book some of the best sentences. you need to experience this book, you need to read it blind.
This book just taught me that there are people who are worth it out there. People like Lou who would leave everything behind to help someone like Will. People like Will who would push Lou to LIVE even though that would mean she wouldn’t be around that much.
My favorite part was Alicia’s wedding. That moment when they were looking at each other, like they give to each other, that passion, that LOVE and respect…
i enjoyed this book way too much, and i fell in love with the characters.!!
thank you so much for reading, hope you enjoy it.
