Chapter 1
Two hundred feet underground, in a dwarf village, there lived an orphan. His name was Gotrek Brokkfind. Like every other dwarf, he was shorter but also stockier than humans. He overall looked very impressive but was also nice and charismatic. His strong hard muscles made his work as a smith a child’s play. His green eyes looked clever and curious and always avid of learning more. But most of all he grew an impressive long brown beard that partly cowered his chest. Since the death of his parents he lived alone in a humble property composed of three basic rooms: a living room, a bedroom and a kitchen. But it was plenty enough for this lonely dwarf. In his bedroom there was only a small bed next to an uneven bedside table on which a weakly glowing candle stood. The hot wax dripped down the nightstand on books. They were stacked everywhere you could possibly lay your eyes on, and all covered with a thin layer of dust.

Every day, he left to join his crew and worked on all the gold, steel and silver that came from the mines. From jewellery to dwarven swords or even armours, helmets and shields he could craft anything. Fifty years ago this village was raided by goblins, he and many others helped to rebuild it to the point where you could not even notice any signs of an attack. However revenge still burns in him, consuming him slowly to death but it gives his life a meaning. Whenever he feels down he reminds himself the promise he made to himself: one day he will avenge his parents, and it gives him new energy to carry on with his life.

He will always remember the day it happened. He was in his teenage years when the goblin king Gnilruk the Terrible and his army assaulted the village. It was hell in its purest form: the smell of burnt flesh and fresh meat, the shouts of terror and rage, the collision of axes and daggers, crushed skulls and sliced throats. It was a very tensed fight but in the end the dwarves lost. Most of them were dead or captured others hided. Gotreks parents were planing to assassinate Gnilruk by surprising him as he was delivering his speech. Gotrek was worried they would get killed but his cold blooded father simply declared: “At least this bastard won’t come out unharmed”. They jumped out of their hiding place and charged fiercely. They swung their double sided axes and slaughtered five goblins. But the king was quicker, he raised his daggers while they were recovering from their assault. He sliced Gotrek’s mother’s throat, instantly killing her in a blood bath. But his father had time to pull out a knife and he slashed the repugnant creatures face making him look even more atrocious than before. The king charged and impaled the hero with his two daggers and lifted him up covering himself with the warm blood of his victims. Gotrek watched the entire scene with horror and disgust from his hiding palace. Shouting victory the goblins left leaving a massacre behind. The village was a pile of ashes and the gold vanished. A few days later Gotreks older brother Bergod left seeking revenge and promised to come back. It took half a decade for Bergod to come back.

Gotrek did not expect his brother to ever come back, he imagined him living a happy live or sometimes dead but never coming back. He came back to the village a with a big scar and lots of stories but also very useful information about the goblin king and his hiding places. He was escorted by other victims of Gnilruk rage. They were humans, dwarves, elves and even hobbits. They were twenty-three in total. Most of them didn’t have any experience in fighting and had needed to learn how to handle a weapon but their determination made it easier and quicker to teach. Bergod had a strategy to defeat Gnilruk but first he told Gotrek his numerous adventures. He had encountered many mystical creatures, a fiery dragon with burning claws and  breath of smoke, an ice giant able to throw chunks of ice which had the size of a house or even a dark magician who could call spirits from the dead.

Bergod started explaining his intentions, pointing on his map he said “So here is located his main hideout where he keeps his treasure, but it is way too dangerous to attack. Estimated there is about five hundred goblins that would give up on life to protect their holly king. We do not stand a chance if we rush in there. It is suicide. Therefore, I suggest we first attack small secondary hideouts to force him to show himself…” “Or he can simply send out his minions to hunt us down”, interrupted Sigurd, a tall strong human fighter. Bergodd explained: “No he won’t, that’s their main weakness, goblins can’t do anything without supervision of intellectually superior ones and Gnilruk won’t risk anything for twenty people… Until we actually harm him.” “So what are we going to do ?”,asked several people.” My plan is to take down his mines one by one, sneaking in explosives and destroying the whole thing once we took down all five mines… I am sure we will figure out something”, he said laughing. “Lets go kick goblin asses then!”, shouted someone and everybody started cheering loudly. Bergodd brought back silence and said: “First we need to forge better swords and axes or we won’t stand a chance. We also need to stock up on provisions. This is going to be a very long journey.”
Gotrek had always waited for this day to come, he had imagined it in many different ways. And there it was: the meaning of his life, the extraordinary quest, the ultimate revenge.
