A couple of weeks ago I was on my way to a friend’s wedding. It was a Friday afternoon and I was all dressed-up
nicely with a good mood. It was in Haifa so I took the train to go there and got off at Hof-Hakarmel station.
I walked from the train station and arrived near the venue of the wedding, (Merkaz Hakongressim) when
suddenly…
Just as I crossed the street I heard a voice coming from the middle of the road. I tried to ignore it but the voice
kept coming and weeping towards my ears in a steady pace – Miao, Miao, Miao…
it was obvious that this yowl belonged to a kitten. I couldn’t see it but I knew it was right there in the middle of
the road.
“Oh mannnnnnnnnnnn”, I yelled at myself, frustrated with this situation which, unfortunately, happened to me
many times before.
Now what?
I was faced with this dilema and had to WEIGH THE PROS AND CONS.
On the one hand, maybe this little kitten’s mother is still alive and she might want to get back to it and feed it.
So, if I take it now, she will go there and search for hours and she won’t be able to find it.
On the other hand, maybe she won’t be able to cross the road safely.
In which case, if I don’t take it, the kitten will stay there all alone without anyone to take care of it.
Besides, if I take it, maybe I will have to “breast feed” it with a bottle because it’s too young to eat normal food.
bottle feeding a kitten is a lot of work.
Besides, I’m on my way to my best friends wedding.
So, if I take it with me, where will I put it during the wedding?!
So should I leave it there or take it?
that was my question.
Decisons decisions.
I made my choice – not to take it. I was probably being selfish, or practical, or I don’t know.
I have mixed feelings, and a bit of regret, but that’s life.
I shall be telling this story (to myself) with a sigh, (of regret, mainly).
I wonder if this kitten is still alive – or not.
Anyway, you can’t win them all. The same thing happened to me a few weeks ago here in Holon, near school,
and this time I managed to save a kitten and even find a kid who took it home.
Anyway, my choice has made all the difference. Who knows if it worked out for the best or not.
We have to many cats in Israel, and the only way to prevent these situations from happening is to
sterilize them. This will prevent a lot of suffering kittens, and lengthen the lives of their mothers.
When you see a cat with a cut on its ear, you know it was sterilized, and it’s usually in a better physical
condition.
