What is Enterprise Mobility?

Enterprise mobility refers to an approach to work that enables employees to perform their jobs from anywhere using mobile devices and applications. It encompasses not only the use of smartphones and tablets for business purposes but also the mobility of corporate data and workers themselves. For example, an employee can upload a presentation from their desktop PC to a cloud storage service and access it from a personal Apple iPad while on a client site.

Enterprise mobility management (EMM) and other technologies have emerged to support IT departments in enabling mobile workers and addressing security risks. An acceptable use policy for employees can also contribute to a successful enterprise mobility strategy.

The Importance of Enterprise Mobility

Enterprise mobility Solutions is crucial as it provides employees with flexibility and choice, ultimately improving job satisfaction and increasing productivity. In today’s digital age, organizations are already implementing some form of enterprise mobility. Initially, enterprise-class mobile devices were typically provided by employers and focused on personal information management capabilities such as mobile email, calendars, and contacts.

However, with the introduction of smartphones like the iPhone and Android devices, the concept of app stores gained popularity among consumers. As employees realized the efficiency and user-friendly interfaces of personal smartphones, the bring your own device (BYOD) trend emerged. Employees began using their personal smartphones for work purposes without employer permission, further emphasizing the need for enterprise mobility strategies.

While BYOD is a common strategy, some organizations, particularly in regulated industries like finance, continue to purchase devices for employees and restrict their use solely for corporate purposes. Another approach, known as corporate-owned, personally enabled (COPE), involves organizations buying devices for employees with the understanding that they will be used for both business and personal tasks.
