Paul Murphy was an American chess player, one of the greatest chess players of all generations, who during his lifetime was considered the best chess player in the world. He is a member of the World Chess Hall of Fame.
Murphy entered the world fitness class in 1849, at the age of 12 and was immediately placed second in the world. He rose to first place in 1852 and kept it until 1864, when he played his last games. Murphy was one of the first chess geniuses who played according to the accepted rules in modern times.

Murphy grew up in a cultured environment, where chess and music were the highlight of the family’s Sunday gatherings.
