Winning a Race

It’s the middle of a big race. The race
car suddenly pulls up to the pit stop
and 13 seconds later, the car is back
in the race. What happened?
In those seconds, the race-car
mechanics put fuel in the car,
changed the tires and checked the
brakes. A race-car driver always
wants to win, and it is the
mechanic’s job to make sure that it
happens.
What makes this job difficult is the
pressure. Tom Holden, a race-car
mechanic, says, “You have to work
fast. It’s hard, but very exciting” He
knows that the driver needs every
second on the race track to succeed.
The mechanic must do a perfect job.
Then the car will finish the race
safely, and in first place.
