Stanza 1
In this picture someone appears to be climbing a mountain with a friend and needs help to get up. Their friend stretches their hand out to help them and pull them up with them. The climb is probably difficult and the person from which we see the point of view is struggling to catch up with his friend and that’s why he needs a little help. The person needing help finds his friend trustworthy and he counts on him to help him up and not let go. The friend has done a good deed and helped someone instead of minding his own business.
In this picture, a young man is helping an elderly woman cross the street carefully while she’s carrying her bags. The lady is probably walking home from running errands and the guy is strolling around or going somewhere. Although there’s a chance that the young man is a complete stranger to the elderly woman, he still chooses to be kind and take time out of his day to help someone who might have trouble crossing the street safely. It is a selfless act.
A quote from the poem: “ one self- denying deed”
This quote relates to the pictures we chose and connects to them because both pictures show a situation where someone was selfless and did a self denying deed, as said in the quote. According to the poem, both acts of kindness shown in the pictures, make a day worthwhile and well spent.
Stanza 2
In this picture, a man is laying down on his couch and watching television. It appears that the man has just gotten back from work as he is dressed and not wearing pajamas, and he slumped himself on the couch to take a break from his long day, nevertheless, that break turned out to be longer than expected and there he is on the couch for the rest of his day. He looks like he doesn’t want to speak with anyone or communicate.
In this picture, a man is slumping on a couch in his house while eating Cheetos, a cheesy snack, and not even using his hands to eat it. Perhaps if he was sitting up, he would’ve been able to eat with his hands, however he’s occupied with his hands because he’s playing some video game. He is so lazy, he put his plate with Cheetos on his chest to eat it only with his mouth. It’s pretty easy to see that this man doesn’t have something more valuable to do with his life like be with his family, do house chores like cleaning or cooking, and he is focused on his game. This man is enjoying himself, whereas another person may see him as lazy and a time waster.
A quote from the poem: “ You’ve nothing done that you can trace”
This quote from the poem reflects on the two pictures we have chosen because both of the people in the pictures are basically doing nothing and wasting their time sitting in front of the tv instead of doing something worthwhile that might help others. Therefore, according to the poem, if you didn’t do anything which you can trace, you can count your day lost.
