What is Augmented Reality?

AR is technology and methods that allow overlaying of real-world objects and environments with 3D virtual objects using an AR device, and allow the virtual to interact with the real-world objects to create intended meanings.

What does Augmentative Reality do?

It is the generation of images of real-world environments. Second is using technology that allows the overlaying of 3D images over the images of the real-world objects. The third is the use of technology to allow users to interact and engage with the simulated environments.

Ideas for educational use in the classroom using augmented reality.

  • AR can be quickly recruited to revive existing materials – no need to create brand new stuff
  • AR materials can be accessed by learners anywhere, using their own devices
  • AR can help educators and training providers to convey complex subjects
  • AR doesn’t replace traditional learning process, it boosts it by providing an alternative visual learning opportunity
  • AR doesn’t require learners to buy sophisticated equipment or expensive materials
  • AR helps to maintain attention on a particular item or topic for  longer
  • AR offers gamification potential, and almost 68% of learners report that gamified courses are more or much more motivating than traditional ones.

Math Ninja AR

Math Ninja AR makes learning math fun for younger children by incorporating physical movements such as; stretching, bending, squatting, crawling, reaching, and peering to find the answer through the many levels inside the app to help stimulate a child’s memory and help them retain information.

I would use this in my classroom as a center to help students that need to practice their fluency (ISTE, 1.5.d., 2021).

Wonderscope

Through your Wonderscope, you can see the story take place all around you, whether you open the app in your room or outdoors. Read your lines aloud to engage with and talk to characters, and help them solve problems along the way.

I would use this app to make our level reading stories come to life. This would help student be excited about the story. Their comprehension about what they read will be much deeper (ISTE, 1.6.c., 2021)

Google Lens

Google Lens is a useful way to help identify all sorts of plant life, learn about landmarks, translate words, or identify animals. All you have to do is hold your device up to what you want to learn about, and it’ll tell you.

I work at a charter elementary with a focus of agriculture. This app would help us identify plants on campus.

3D Brush

With 3D Brush students can add live effects to scenes right in front of them. Students can also use your finger to draw and write photorealistic stuff in the scene in front of you. Students can also take pictures of their creation to keep.

Student could use this AR to add illustrations to their writing.

Assemblr EDU

With Assemblr, students learn traditional academic content through virtual and augmented reality. Teachers can also create multiple online classrooms and record and present virtual 3D presentations.

This AR app would be useful because both students and teachers can interact together.
